2SID Inside
Greetings!
A couple weeks ago I began experimenting with recording 2SIDs from real hardware and recording devices. This
gave me the idea to found a new SoundCloud channel named "2SID Inside"...
https://soundcloud.com/2sid-inside/
This is a "PRO" channel that I pay for yearly, so it will stay there as long as SoundCloud exists and will provide
unlimited space for new/missing recordings of high quality 2SID music recorded from my own C64C with a SID2SID board.
So, whenever there is a new set of 2SIDs to record (i.e. new Parties and Compos supporting it) you will get to hear
them on there as soon as possible.
Of course, I have uploaded .mp3 files of these recordings onto my own DropBox space, which you can get here:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/voh4cw9n2rhb9uk/hneXVVJ_IC
If anyone in the scene suggests a better place for these recordings (e.g. some web space on c64.org) then I'll be
happy to upload them there, otherwise they will stay on DropBox for as long as possible.
Hardware used:
- C64C with modded SID2SID board and 1541 ultimate-II.
- Two 8580/R5 SID chips.
- Tascam DR-40 4-track Linear PCM Recorder
- Commodore 1084 monitor
Software used:
- Tascam DR-40 firmware (recording .wav files)
- mxWaveEdit (trimming, normalising, fading, mp3 encoding (LAME/extreme))
All wav recordings are at 96000hz sample rate and 24-bit depth... I'm sure this is more than enough for HQ recordings.
There are still some missing 2SIDs to record, but only for one of these reasons...
1.) They are too basic for my taste, but if you demand a recording of them then let me know.
2.) They require two 6581 SID chips, which I don't have at the moment and would require modification on my SID2SID board,
as well as a breadbox C64 which I don't own (yet). These tunes are mainly from Rayden, including a couple that use digi samples.
If anyone out there has 2SID hardware supporting 6581 and proper recording requipment similar to mine, then I would appreciate it
if you could send me these .wav recordings and I will upload them onto the SoundCloud channel. I will NOT accept
emulated recordings and/or non-mono recordings (unless specified that it's made for "Stereo" output).
Now for some thank-you & messages to the following...
Mace/Secure...
Bastiaan, thank you for supplying the initial SID2SID board and components. I'm sorry that we couldn't get it working
properly during X'2012, and I had so much trouble linking it with the cartridge pin that I had to contact Hermit to
sort that little mess out. Still, thank you very much!
Hermit/Samar/Singular...
Miahly, thanks a million for modding the SID2SID board to be wired through $d420/$d500 registers, as well as
the personal letter you posted me with instructions. :) It's highly appreciated.
Xiny6581 and Wackee/Arise...
Thank you both for suggesting on what procedures to do in order to make my recordings high-quality. I hope you
two, as well as everyone else, are satisfied with the results. Xiny, I am aware that you also do 2SID
recordings but please don't see this as a competition. ;)
Thank you all, and happy listening!

Nice you recorded all this!
I listened to Icony and think the YT version sounds better:

What could be the difference? You got tips from Xiny.
Must say yours and GRG's are probably the best!
P.S. Minor issue: in dropbox dir. it says Mr. Do's Castle Medley is from 2012 it should be 2013.
P.P.S. Sorry I said pretty please as Groepaz already did but you know I always mean well! :)

Yogibear,
I fixed that minor bug... changed from 2012 to 2013. Sorry about that.
Regarding Icony... that's fine if you like the stereo recording more, but wasn't the tune made for mono initially?
As for your requests... I need some more time for it but I can't really sit at the C64 all the time. ;)
@others... would be nice if you gave some feedback on the recordings please. ... feels like I waste my time sometimes. :P |

Conrad,
No problem! (To be exact the title in CSDb misses the dot after Mr)
Ah it just sounds better to me because the YT version is in stereo. That's plausible.
I reckon some 2SIDs sound better in stereo and some in mono.
OK! I'm very curious what you make of the best tune I ever made! Good luck! :) |

Conrad, do I understand correctly that Hermit used the board you bought from me to fix the problem and add some featuresin the meantime? If so, that's great to hear! |

That's right, Mace. It uses most of the ICs you put on as well, so no dramatic changes were done to it other than modding the board for connecting on the $d420/$d500 line rather than $de00. Once again, thank you for supplying the hardware to me. :) |
