Merge votes between multiple linked handles
For quite some time I was urging to start a topic on merging votes between multiple handles linked to each other, to give a more realistic rank for an actual scener, regardless on how many handles it used.
Seeing all the credits moved from RRFreelance to Robert Ramsay, yet currently seeing RRFreelance being ranked #2 as Graphican in the charts, just makes it all look broke and misleading.
So, time to debate... what do you think about merging votes? |

I give you an example why this should not be done: A person could have one fake identity to make silly shit, and a serious identity used to make good stuff. I don't want to give 10 to both, I want to be able to vote 1 for the handle making shit and 10 for the excellent serious scener. Same goes for a lamer in his teen age that finally after years changed handle and started making good stuff.
And before you question, no, it's not just hypothetical, there are plenty. |

So much potential in this set-up. Musician celebrity showdown: Conrad vs CRD, Jeff vs Soren, MacMagix vs Reyn. And so on, and so on. |

Votes here are somehow really, really important for some users, with a obvious backside: Drama Galore and hurt feelings if someone votes lower than, like 8, sometimes 9.
In my opinion votes can be useful for top lists, but then again: people who don't think the top list reflect their own personal top lists are seriously downvoting top notch stuff to "get it right", which then provoke others to do the same, etc etc. That goes for scener votes too. People are downvoting others because of personal hate etc. It's like kindergarden.
The voting system only has one real function that works: CSDb online compos, and that is accidental. CSDb was not built to host these at all.
In my personal dream world I would get rid of the voting system. It creates too much drama, and the system is flawed. |

Even that is debatable

In my personal dream world I would get rid of the voting system. It creates too much drama, ... Like most mods I totally agree - once again like on any Groundhog Day
Would be great if torn dresses and exchange of well-known arguments are enough this time, it's always somewhat painful to see ppl freak out, ragequit and/or get banned because of that silly old topic, as the debate's so useless |

Using the voting for online compos is weird too…
People will vote to make sure that their favourite entry wins a compo… but if all the entries in a compo are shit, you then end up with shit getting scores of “10” because one shitty entry is slightly less shit than all the other entries.
The regular voting is also borked.
Hell, what is a 10? For me, the old Crest demos, Light, Horizon, etc etc.. I’ll always prefer those to modern demos. Modern demos might be more polished … but we sit behind PCs with 1000s times more performance than we had in the 80s coding on Expert Cartridge etc…
So, yeah, the charts are all bullshit really.
But… if CSDb has no charts… it loses a lot too. Because the charts are an easy way to find awesome demos … like Memento Mori and Edge of Disgrace ;-) |

Also… it would be possibly unfair on Robert Ramsay to vote based on the RRFreelance releases… he didn’t ask for these to be released, he simply put them on the web, in PNG format (not a native C64 executable format and therefore not a “release”) as a demonstration of methods, of his toolsets, etc… he didn’t want the images released, but someone else released them now, so it seems unfair that those images could drag his rating down.

Charts have been part of the scene almost since the beginning. All of them have been biased and dramatic anyway, CSDb can be just as borked.
Btw, I tried upvoting Memento Mori, but it had no impact on the final result, *shrug*. |

So it seems the majority of the mods agree. So what IS stopping it? Kindergarden indeed :) |

It will make a nice experiment to remove the voting system, but I fear the mods will loose their jobs, because this place becomes alot less exciting. |

It would remove a whole lot of drama, that's for sure. |

Six mods agreed to remove votes ~2 years ago
We approached Perff
and nothing meaningful happened from that point forward
Sound familiar? |

If you remove votes, can my 52274 ones atleast count for, maybe an icecream,
a bottle of good whiskey or perhaps a ticket to Oslo.
I mean many Cooperations still have this value system, COOP, Hemköp,
ICA whathaveyou in Sweden. I want value ! :D |

Inflation has made your 50k votes pretty worthless, I think. Sad story. |

recode votes. just a "like", and you can not vote for your own stuff and if you are in the same group the product has been done.
make an popular -> last 7 days
last month
last year.
so new stuff get attention too
done ;) |

Yup. 90% of our job has been to calm down voting drama queens, mass deleters and rage quitters during the years. We won't be needed after votes (and comments! Don't forget comments - they can hurt too!) are gone. |

changing it to something using just "like" (or thumb up/down like on pouet) would indeed be a huge improvement. Actually pouet does most vote related things so much better than csdb - don't think it has less drama though :) |

Well, the topic quickly changed to the usual "Remove or keep voting system" debate, so I give in...
Yes, remove the voting system! I think comments should stay though, especially Production Info / Trivia / Summary.
To those who love & endorse votes... make a Chart/Ranks demo about it... there's a "C64 Chart" type just for this.
Cheers. |

Oh, my sweet summer child.
What makes you think that anything will be fixed here related to the voting system?
It's fucked up beyond repair for more than two decades and no one at all who would be able to make a change cares about it. |

na, removing it completly would make it hard for people, new people, to find good stuff in this nearly endless mass of releases.
so yes, a like system, where you can not vote for yourself or a release of your group would be top.
let you filter by total, last 7 days, last month, last year. |

I've got some 11K votes but I don't care at all if they're gone, keep voting just out of bad habit.
We can share a bottle of Schnaps at X (I provide it), but you must drink 5 times as much of it than me, then, of course |
