Confirmation dialog when closing tab/window when there is value in the textarea

It is at most 10 minutes to implement and it would save some of us from a bit of headache after writing a long text and accidentally closing the tab/browser before submitting the form. Yes I know, CTRL+SHIFT+T reopens the closed tab with the text still intact (at least in Chrome), but that doesn't work in incognito mode...

so, and how come you write long posts, and then instead of clicking submit, you wander off into random directions that may result in closing the tab in question ?

Well I usually can't write a long post in one go, as I routinely get interrupted by people while I'm pretending to work and as I'm trying to act interested by slowly moving my head up and down and humming attentively (whilst actually zoning off and thinking about Lady Gaga and/or Donald Trump), I tend to forget about my important, unfinished posts on CSDb.

Also, it happened a couple of times when I started to write a forum reply, then scrolled down (as for some bizarre reason the textbox for the reply is above the thread and not under it, so if you want to check the post you're replying to - which is most likely at the bottom -, you have to scroll back waaaaaaay down), then changed the tab, then at a later time got back to the tab, forgot that I was writing something as I was on the bottom of the thread or somewhere where I couldn't see that I started a reply, and closed the tab as my mind is constantly rattled with hundreds of redundant microinformations and I am easily distracted.

But maybe I'm the only one who's experiencing this shit, dunno...

Any more questions?

^Gold!

Much as I can see many of Jailbird's points (especially with the textbox at top of page thingie), I learned through many lost livejournal posts that the only safe place to edit a long post is Vim. Even autosave and JS hacks are not to be trusted.

Besides, I'm not a huge fan of tabs that don't close when you tell them to :P

if you ask me FB nagging if I want to finish my text is driving me nuts. I guess the solution is what CJ suggests. Edit field being placed on the bottom is a nice idea tho.

Well, why don't you finish your texts? :)

Yep, with the onbeforeunload event, even IE4 supports it.

I am too lame for Vim, so I am usually using Gmail's draft for writing important messages.

Well i sort of agree.. Some of my best rants in 8-bit space were foreverly lost in this post form. I tent to copy the text to some more reliable editor when i start feeling the html behind is getting shaky.. should do that more often really..

Yep. whenever I have something 'important' to mention that takes more than 5 minutes to write, I just use Vim and paste from that. CSDb's editor doesn't provide any visual preview of \[code\] blocks or the like (during editing), so Vim works fine.

Hell, there probably is a BBcode syntax file for Vim(* somewhere, giving some preview of the stuff you write ;)

* = probably also for Emacs, don't want to start a flame war, although everyone knows Vim beats Emacs

Keep telling yourself that, as long as it makes you feel less inferior...
