Locked Entries - are they really needed?

Probably another hot topic this one, but.. is there a valid good reason for having entries being locked by those who added them?

In particular, is there a reason to keep the lock icon for more than a year or so?

I frequently come across CSDb entries where I’d like to update the GFX type, fix the screenshot, add credits, etc etc… but can’t. I can fix the graphic entries on C64GFX … but I’d rather fix them here at the same time.

I wonder what the reasons are for some to put the lock? Is it to stop abuse by others? If so, what abuse? Or is it to try to maintain something that’s incorrect somehow? (Eg. An unrealistic screenshot)

Genuinely interested.

It's shouldn't be available for normal users, only trusted/mod/admins should be able to block normal users from modifying an entry.

I am a nasty entry locker (my own entries only)...
But iAN is right!

Quote: Entry locking is indeed bit of an oddball feature in a collaborative database. Useful for vandalism prevention, of course, but maybe a mandatory "why am I locking this entry" message should be required when locking. At least then the mods would have some basis for either granting or removing the lock.

(How does one even lock an entry btw? Is it the "Set me as maintainer" button when editing release info?)

I would second this idea; I think it is a good compromise between the status quo and removing the feature.

I still lock my entries, for the same reason Burglar does. I also hate people changing my screenshots and using ugly frodo colors and various other things.

Is there a reason why they do it? Eg. Missing borders, image having more than 16 colours (and not being a magical “4000 colours are possible!” interlace pic) etc?

If so, just follow the screenshot rules and update again?

If not, report the user doing it - there’s a pop up before changing screenshots asking whether you’re “making this better” with the new screen.

Regarding the reporting option: Is there a way to see who has made changes to my entry (if you are not a mod)?

Additionally, is it possible to enable monitoring on one's entries? Without such a feature, it becomes nigh impossible to track which entries have been changed.

AFAIK ... The change log of entries was once enabled to see for everyone... but at least not anymore.
(Maybe i am wrong)

Quoting 'MySelf'
... in 99.99% of cases locking entries doesn't make ANY sense. In the other 0.01% make sure you gave ALL the info, especially credits before locking the entry...

See here Orbix Title

And in addition, yes, as iAN said, these 0.01% might also be reserved to mods/trusted to end edit wars (e.g. when someone wants to delete his own stuff to erase it from history or when someone keeps acting stupid <- though this might also be solved by banning)
