Find broken downloads

Is there any query I can do to find entries with broken downloads? I've tried the advanced search but couldn't see "broken download" checkbox. Was thinking of trying to resolve some of them...

Hmm, there was a page years ago that displayed all entries with broken links. Don't have a link anymore and not sure if it still works.

I do know CBA used it to get rid of lots of dead links; maybe he still knows the link?

This isn't the broken link displayer mentioned in the previous post, but you can search comments with it to find the word broken. Came up with quite a few in a quick test

http://csdb.dk/search/comments.php

But still, the original download checker was better

Damn, searched through some old bookmarks file and found it! Strange, only lists 52 entries with broken downloads.

Considering there are 27 releases which only have external links, that doesn't seem to me as too strange. But maybe the scripts are broken too :)

Ah cool page. However, it seems to only check external urls. It doesn't respect the "corrupted file" flag... :-|

Since most of (if not all) the releases with broken links have internal (i.e. working) download links too, it isn't such a big deal.
Now, what actually could be a problem when the download URLs of those releases that only have external links stop working. So they all need re-uploads to the internal CSDb server.

Here is another link showing corrupted files.
http://csdb.dk/misc/corruptedfiles.php

There have been made some simple DB-extract pages like this over the years when requested by someone, but they are not really documented anywhere.
If you need somthing, just ask like here. :)

Duh, the broken link was used mainly for entries without downloads, remember now. ;)

Thanks Perff! While at it, you might want to check your "broken link" algorithm for external urls... Several of the ones I've tried do actually work - although being reported as broken. Examples:

Arcade Football &GD
APIandC64

Is there a problem with DropBox links and redirects perhaps?

i think the links are only checked once in a while, thats why status is wrong sometimes. also obviously if the server doesnt provide a proper reply, but serves some placeholder something instead, then it cant be checked.

When the check algorithm was made dropbox didn't exists. :) At least I didn' know about it.
And yes, there have been problems with a few sites which dosn't return the classic way of letting me know link is valid.
Can't remember exactly how it is implemented.
This is also why the text says: "Link might be broken" and not "Link is broken". :)

that said, cant we just disable external links for downloads? does it even still make sense to have them? (other than 10 years ago, when disk space and/or db size might have been an issue)

I somewhat second "no external links" BUT would request that users are allowed to upload larger files than currently. (For e.g. Manual PDF files and alike)

What Count 0 said.

But some tools that gets updated frequently like Pixcen might get into trouble.

Effectively, external stuffs can be linked on the summaries section, like pdf manuals and so on.

bepp: infact the contrary is true - those entries shouldnt get updated with new versions in the first place.

I somehow expected that comment from you, gpz ;-)

While I agree with you in general (for C64-releases) I'm not sure the same should apply for 'other platform tools', which might have frequent releases. I'd hate to see csdb bloated with versions of versions of 'other tools'... :-|

I think other platform releases should only have one single entry without direct Downloads at all, but instead have a link to their Webpage. Would imho be adequate - at least for the projects that are still alive (i.e. VICE, 64tass etc.).
For dead projects the last version could be added as download to csdb.

the external sites often disappears, and bye bye external link to the tool. Upload it here and forget where it was from. Use rar or 7z split archive, with 1mb splits.

Actually, I frequently find it misleading to use external links and then update the other platform tool = target of link, for instance, without adding any new version release entry to CSDb (or at least some kind of comment in outdated version's entry). If there is version 1.y on external link but if I check here and find latest version 1.x, I wouldn't bother leeching external link...

Since there is "website [containing more information about this release]", I would not miss external downloads. If no or no working internal download is there, I'd check that website.
And okay, if site is really down, sb could just up an internal link, right?
