True Drive Emulation and Virtual Device Traps enabled? That should do the trick. |

Thanks for the info...
I tried what you suggested, however I still can't seem to add the disk image...
Is that the correct procedure or do I perhaps need to convert the philez to another format?
Cheers! |

What went wrong when you tried to load the demo then? Your file should be in d64-format. |

Sorry, but it sounds like you're too lazy to have a quick look at the manual. Vice virtually swallows everything, just drag'n'drop the D64, PRG, T64, P00 onto the Vice icon. Say, have you even tried it yourself for more than 10 seconds? ;-) |

Ok, just to prove that my attitude is not newbie-unfriendly: Alt+8 opens the Attach Disk Image dialog. "Attach" it, then enter LOAD"*",8,1:RUN
Which file format does your demo have? |

Oh shit... my soul will fry in hell for that! :-o
No seriously, all I wanted to point out is that you don't need to be a rocket scientist to get programs to run in Vice. ;-) |

That's a pity. Otherwise people would stick to real C64s. |

Ok, I'll file a request for some userunfriendly features to the VICE team immediately! :-) |

I did spend a fair bit of time trying to get the demo going with no luck - I managed to get some of the other one's going with no probs (other than the emulator having fag on some of them)...
The Dutch Breeze demo I downloaded from here consisted of the following philez:
1!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_1
1!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_2
2!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_1
2!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_2
3!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_1
3!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_2
4!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_1
4!Dutch_Breeze.BML.Side_2
I tried renaming them to .d64, .p00 etc with no luck...
The error I keep getting is an error window consisting of "VICE Error! - Cannot attach specified file"
Hence the question of whether or not the philez require some kind of conversion to a format VICE understands or I am still lazy as Steppe says even though I have RTFM - perhaps I'm missing something! |

Yes you need to convert those files to d64. You can do that with starzip.
But i would recommend you download the d64-files directly from www.c64.ch instead. |

Btw, demodungeon.com also offers demos in .d64 format :-) |

Is it just my version of Vice that is special, or?
When I attach a file named 1!<something> and the rest (2!.. 3!.. and 4!.. files) are present in the same dir, it works fine - just as if I were attaching a d64.
Can't remember which version of Vice I use, but it's a rather new one.
BTW: Does anyone know some good c64-file convertion programs for linux? (Havn't really checked myself :) ) |

I tried it here on WinVice 1.12 and it doesn't work. Which version and OS are you using? Click HELP->About to get the version number. |

I use Linux and Vice 1.11
I simply attach the file 1!... and it recognice it as a D64.
A little dump from Vice:
--
Filesystem Image Probe: D64 disk image recognised: 1!Graphixmania_2.Modern_Arts, 35 tracks (read only).
DriveImage: Unit 8: D64 disk image attached: 1!Graphixmania_2.Modern_Arts.
--
A completly other thing:
Is everyone running windows out there?
Almost all tools and whatever only comes to win, like Cyber Crunch and Star Commander.
I always thought that people who knew about computers, here asuming that c64 people fall under this category, tried to avoid that crappy OS called windows. :) |

Star Commander is DOS... |

Ok. Sorry then. :)
I guess my point is that I have a hard time finding c64 tools for linux - which I prefer as a developing platform, and I constantly see new tools poping up for M$ os's (grrr).
So far I only got the tools I made myself, and a cross-assembler.
kinda off-topic I know. |

Ever heard of cbm4linux? Seems to be a transfering tool like Star Commander. Never tried it, though. |

Perhaps people find it easier to make it for Windows or DOS? Plenty of compilers etc for them. Perhaps it is a source code issue because distrubting binaries for Linux can have kernel version issues. I code for DOS/Windows because it is common and well established interface and the handful of people I have in mind to use my tools only use DOS or Windows based systems as that is how they come by default. |

Stryyker: when you install a Linux distribution, you get all the development tools you need, as opposed to Windows, which doesn't even come with a BASIC interpreter anymore. If you're so ashamed of your code that you want to distribute your program in binary form, you can link it statically, and you won't have any problems with library versions.

Many linux/BSD distros may but not all. I was mainly thinking of all the windows tools and many linux distros don't install all GTK etc. tools. I personally don't develop for linux because I'm too lazy to get all needed docs for using their GUI's (I already owned Windows books) and I also prefer my stuff to be available for the masses. As I previously said the few people my stuff is directed at only use Windows. I also enjoy using Windows and partly develop my stuff for DOS/Windows because I get sick of the 1337 *nix is best for everything. I have no probs with people developing for any platform. |

I've found SDL quite easy to use, windows/linux/whatever compatibility comes automatically. Though it'll be a bitmap screen (framebuffer) application then, but that's fine for me.. |

Stryyker: Please name one normal Linux distribution that doesn't come with development tools. |

You misread it (I should of written it cleaner). I meant they come with development tools but not always all the development tools I needed. This is a fair bit off topic anyway. |
