Telnet'able BBS'es??

Hey, I just realized - I'm probably kinda slow - that there are a couple of old C64 bbs's I used to call back in my hayday available on the net via telnet. This is ofcourse Antidote and The Hidden, which was a Motiv 8 board back when L.A.Style was a member - the-hidden.hopto.org

I wonder, are there any other boards out there worth checking out (bear in mind, I've been gone for like 7-8 years..)

Well its pretty easy to setup a C64 BBS on telnet now, thanks to the folks at www.telbbs.com. We'd really love to see some more boards outside North America, especially since that is where most of the action is these days.

And of course all of these guys need more users to call, even the 10-15 a day we typically get could easily be increased if more people knew about them.

Heh, well, I actually very much felt like setting my old board The Gateway back up, but it would have to look exactly like it did back in 92-93 then, and I don't think I have the disks or the c*base program anylonger, unfortunately......but I'm still considering it, or maybe get Bird to set Mount Olympus back up.....still thinking about it....

True, I see a big chance to increase the number of callers by advertising them much better. Have all you guys gotten your own banners and stuff like that? Also every scene dude has to call one of his old buddies in order to inform them ;))

I´ve forgot all about using the C*base system, that´s for sure! Haven´t been on a real C64 board since 1994, I guess! But I sure remember The Gateway from your Epic days.. Could be cool, if you did - even if I didn´t really like you as a sysop back then, haha ;-)

But times changes, and I think it could be funny!

Maybe I should ask Tricket to do the same for Dominic. I think, I´ve got an old c*base program on some of my old disks... Probably Dominic or something.. Hmmm. But actually Dominic wasn´t running in c*base in the beginning - the firsts months or something... So maybe it´s not even c*base, I´ve got.. Will check it..

Yeah go to the centipede website for the info, but in a nutshell, it is the final descendant of Color 64. It is by far the most robust and reliable (IMHO) bbs prg ever released for c64. It is very customizable (with effort).

Usually the only reason I have to reboot is because my Windows 2000 box screws up, or some piece of hardware on the C128 causes a problem. Lost Caverns BBS has been online for over 4 weeks without a reboot, and it's dual line of a multiplexed Lt. Kernal!

Having said that, from an asthetics standpoint, nothing really beats C*Base.

Never saw this Centipede system myself back when I called the boards, when I was still active that is, I wonder how spread out is it? To me, the most obvious choice would be C*base or UCBBS, that's the systems everybody knows, atleast as far as I'm concerned :-)

Quite a few BBS software packages were never really used by scene boards... DMBBS, Color64, Color128, Centipede, Image, CNet, ST/R, Spence, EBBS, All American, Omni, etc.

If you remember back there was a time that even C*Base was not looked upon fairly. Everyone was using some modded IvoryBBS. I do remember some boards, like Abyss (NEC HQ - before the bust) and the Garden of Edens, using CNet 64.

For a semi-complete list of BBS software check this website, lists for all platforms:

I actually liked UCBBS pretty much.. I got used for it, and remember I didn´t understand why Tricket wanted C*base instead.. In the very beginning Dominic was running at UCBBS like many US-boards.

See, I prefer UCBBS myself. Maybe that is because the boards I used to frequent the most all ran it. The Forum, TST, Second to None, Tunnel of Warez, just to name a few. For some reason it seemed for a while as if it were only the demo groups or smaller "non-elite" groups that ran with C*Base. I think that is why it has a cheaper look to it for me.

Duke: yeh I agree, UCBBS was the best, especially the BEST version of it by Pudwerx (used later on Terminal Obsession & The Forum (resurrected versions of the boards anyway)).

Is there a telnet bbs using UCBBS?

Well, The reason why I changed from UCBBS to C*base is simple. I had some naughty trouble with the code. It simply broke down very often, eventhough Pudwerx made a pal version for me. It never got stable as the NTSC version. Crossfire was amazing, working with C*Base, that made me change. I loved the CYBORG MOD, but it wasn`t stable either, sadly.

I miss my DOMINIC, no doubt! :)

Heh, thanks...I more or less "grew up" with C*Base, I had been calling out for months before I stumbled across UCBBS, which was kinda wierd considering how many bbs's used it, but I guess I just picked out which ones to call first by coincidence..

Jesper, why don't you put it back on telnet then? Would be cool! ;-)

It would be wonderful to see Dominic back online. In fact, I am shocked to see just how many bbs'es are up and running these days. I think I counted 14. Most of them, I think, are American though.

It is true that I remember hearing about UCBBS crashing quite easily. I never had the privelidge of running a BBS myself, but if I did, and the system crashed on me, I'd switch to C*Base, too.

Question: What was the handle of Tommy, the sysop, of Tunnel of Warez? It's been driving me nuts lately, and I can't seem to find anyone who knows. You should know, Tricket!

Yes, but he sold the BBS to a local unknown who then kept it going for Dom. All I remember is that his name was Tommy. Really nice guy, but quite naive and clueless about the scene and life in general. People used to rag on him so much, and his response was always to meet him in NYC for a fist fight. ;) But a nice guy, though, if you can look past the violent nature, heh.

Drumroll, please. I have the answer. I found it on this page:

http://exotica.fix.no/info/scenery/online64/d.html

It says:

"Slayer (sysop 'TUNNEL OF WAREZ', old handle Narcissus, 02-03/92". So that is the answer. Slayer. Although I think he changed it back to Narcissus.

Also, it says about me: "1991 - The early part of the year saw recruitment of Danish cracker Duke from Ikari+Talent." Cracker? The only part that is true about that is that I am white ;) I was a mega-swapper and modem-trader. Later, though, I just cruised the boards to show the Dom flag.

So there, mystery solved!

Just as a followup to this topic (better late than never...)

I'm planning to (finally!) release C*Base v3.3 this month. The only major bug remaining is Punter being broken, but I have no real idea how to fix it, and X-Modem1k is nicer and faster anyway =)

I'm hoping to be able to kick together a telnet gateway as a companion, so that the C*Base v3.3 will really be complete, without needing add-on software, but I might have to wait until v3.4 with that; I *really* want to get this out now...

C*Base v3.3 will be fully GPL, including manuals and all (although the developer manual leaves a lot to wish for; help to document the BASIC-files would be welcome).
