thank you PC WORLD. You're more objective than ever:
"Yes, we know--it was the first personal computer to sell more than a million units...","But.. its TV commercials featured William Shatner"

P.C. = personal computer. Hence, the Vic-20 qualifies. And so does the c64 ('best sold pc ever'). |

there was a strict line between personal computers and home computers back in the 80s and the 64 and the VIC were definately home computers. |

Quoting WikipediaA personal computer (PC) is a microcomputer whose price, size, and capabilities make it useful for individuals. The term was popularized by Apple with the Apple II in the late-1970s and early-1980s, and afterwards by IBM with the IBM Personal Computer. Personal computers are also known as home computers.
Quoting Wikipedia, once againThe Commodore 64 is the best-selling single personal computer model of all time.
Now I don't feel like going into a 'definition war' (because I hate those), fact of the matter is that to a lot of people, computers like the vic and the c64 are personal computers, and thus the vic20 qualifies for this list. 'nuff said. |

If you read this list the PC is also included.
You say "Personal Computer", I say "Home Computer", let's call the whole thing off... |

I dont get the idea why this should be a "definition war".
Like I described is the way it was commonly seen in Germany back in the 80s, might been different in Holland and elsewhere. |

"Personal Computer" is a marketting term for small computers which can suit your personal need by loading programs from some read/writable media. That's basically it. Every home computer is also a personal computer.
That the term "PC" is used synonymous for "PC with roots in the IBM PS/2 compatible field" is from the mid/early 90s, where the typical "IBM PC"-term was slowly replaced by just writing "PC". |

like Graham said it's also been used as marketing term (also for the C128), because it sounds more professional to have a PC, the term home computer was affiliated with gaming computers.
And, Graham, the short form PC for IBM PCs was already used in the 80s. |
