Codebase64: Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

Since yesterday i tried to access Codebase64. Only the following text is given:
"The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later. "

Hmm, some people have been leeching this month it seems. I've increased the limits and appears the website is back up now.

how the fuck can you exceed bandwidth limits with a wiki page like that? *shrug*

I'm assuming its all the C=Hacking and book PDFs store on the account. Whatever it is, we drilled through 8gb of bandwidth in May 2012.

wow. makes you wonder how many of the people who download all that actually read it and then produce some c64 stuff.

8GB? Crazy. Should mirror those files somewhere else so they don't knock off the wiki.

I don't run the website, just host it. ;)

But that certainly is the better way to handle it really. Bandwidth usage has been creeping up since late 2007, then it was ~2gb/month.

Out of curiosity, how does 8GB/month even kill it? The servers I rent have 5TB traffic limit, and even when you do manage to cross that, the bandwith is limited to 10/10Mbit (instead of 100/100Mbit).

That usually is just a matter of the hosting service company and depends on their defaults.
Setting up your own root server wihtout any limits e.g. could still be affected by the "housing rules" which some providers apply. Thats completely different from company to company though.

For an text-based info-wiki like this, I'd vote against big files being hosted there.
Even though there are some nice (and considerably large) source-zips, maybe they can be put and linked to ftp-sites instead...

The server that hosts codebase is now blocking traffic again, due to "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded".

@Moloch: Furthermore, I can't access the administration stuff (cPanel) since it suddenly says "login is invalid" although I am using the same as before. I was just going to see whether there are some logs available that would provide a hint about what sort of traffic that causes this bandwidth limit exceeding stuff.

please, don't take it as an advertisement but i'm using hostgator for last 4 years without any limitation issues. i host;

http://www.7dx-party.org
http://www.tr-demoscene.info

and dozen of other sites on my hosting which costs me less than $12 per month (business plan).

before that i was using myhosting.com and i was paying more and more money for each of my domains. i gave up using them after they have deleted all mp3 files from www.7dx-party.org site without even notifying me. reason was "illegal mp3 files are not allowed". i've no problem with that but those mp3 files were party releases. i asked them how they decide which mp3 file is legal and which is not. after a short chat, their final answer was sth like "mp3 files are illegal". :) after leaving them, i started searcing a proper hosting. i read many reviews and decided to use bluehost or hostgator.

just before making a decission, i read a very interesting blog post at 2d boy's blog (creators of World of Goo game). here is the link:

http://2dboy.com/2008/11/18/were-back-almost/

they've said "Our old web hosting provider (bluehost, avoid them!) canceled our account with no warning for using too much of our “unlimited” resources.". and at one of the comments below the post "We moved to a dedicated server with hostgator. It’s been great so far...".

now i can tell you after 4 years, it's been great so far. :)

The current solution is nice in the sense that I pay $0 for it. Let's first await Moloch's response. It is likely that the current problems are (relatively) easy to solve.

Did one Google search on "codebase"... and codebase64 is the 9th popular result. That is why the site has a bandwidth problem...

There are no issues to be worried about, I've hosted the website for the past five years without fail.

I originally offered to host the website because Frantic had trouble finding a reliable option. I think he went through two, or maybe three, "hosts" in a few months before coming over to my services.

There is no such thing as "unlimited" in the webhosting world. Lots of companies offer it, but if you read the terms you'll discover they'll shut you down after you've used what they deem as too much resources.

If people really care to educate themselves about webhosting, head over to Web Hosting Talk and read a few posts. http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
