PAL problems - Hanover Bars? (look here, graham!)

what do hanover bars look like?

i have a pal c64c, very late model with 8xxx series vic. in the usa i have no other pal unit to compare with, but i think there is something wrong with mine. some colors have vertical alternating 'lines' in them, and others have vertical 'zigzag' lines... my NTSC c64s look crystal clear, but i have no other pal machines, or pal monitor gear to compare with - so i havn't been sure if it is the monitor (bt848 / dscaler) or the c64.

another thought was that it had something to do with the slightly out-of-spec of the c64 pal and the bt8x8 series... but i just read some pages on these 'hanover bars' and thought that since some colors produce different patterns, that it might be from that - but no pages give a very good description of what they would look like...

and would a bad/broken VIC produce them ?

those vertical lines/zigzag patterns are the color carrier. my guess is: you connected your c64 to a chroma/luma input, and your cable uses composite as luma, so your monitor displays the color carrier as luma too.

well....i'm going to check that out because it sounds like it could be the problem - except that i made the cable myself, and i'm quite sure that the composite and luma are from different pins, and my composite output works - it also has strange lines in its output, but not as bad as the YC output.

now, there's only one ground in that DIN, i made the assumption that it's ok to ground all of the video and audio connectors to it.

i'm going to open it up again and check for possible problems i might have missed.
