7zip / 7z
Why does zip / winzip even still exist?
7z / 7zip compresses usually 30-70% smaller.
Are there any known problems with 7zip ?
I use it all the time and haven't run into any problems.

I was wondering why github uses zip instead of 7z, ... then I "just" found out that Msoft (the bloat king) bought it :/ |

Well, github uses deflate (compatible with winzip, rar, winrar, 7-zip and several other softwares).
7z is compatible with more formats than winzip (most likely) ever will be but it is convenient to use a format that is well documented, free to use, relatively fast and has a documented efficiently over several filtypes for something like github rather than a poorly documented (but highly efficient) format, also the license could have impact on not choosing 7z (not sure what it looks like but you can find the author on encode.ru and ask him directly). |

https://csdb.dk/help.php?section=rules at V 7.4 says:
"if possible, use D64 Images when uploading C64 files. (you can ZIP d64 files if you wish to save some bandwidth)."
Using .zip allows (some) archives to be unpacked on c64/c128.
7zip is out of question IMHO. |

"(you can ZIP d64 files if you wish to save some bandwidth)."
Please remove this line from the page. Zipping D64 files doesn't save bandwidth since the server/browser already gzips the file when downloading/uploading. It might even increase the bandwidth because it will be double compressed. Therefore it doesn't make sense to zip D64 or T64 images unless multiple files are present for the entry. |

I still can't believe that some non-scener starts an off topic discussion, and still gets fed with more useless discussion.

Done! Never use rar or 7z. Don’t zip d64:s. Zip should still be used for merging many files, of course.
The discussion is silly and went off topic fast. Will close the topic, and ask mstram not to try to discuss this topic in other threads to avoid being banned. |
