fixing an oceanic drive

does anyone on here know anyone who is good a repairing disk drives?

I have an oceanic 9900 that was working great but now its struggling to read disks for some reason.
ive tried cleaning the heads the no avail.

it is still working but works really strange when reading.

or does anyone know if there's a head alignment program that work with this

As Vaseline might not be a staple in many households, alternatives are things like bicycle grease or typewriter oil to apply on the rails.

ok I managed to get a reading.

pin 1 should be 5v and is measuring around 5.09v
pin 5 should be 12v and is measuring around 16v

is this too high for pin 5?

For everydays purposes this would absolutely do it, I think. Don't expect 100% accuracy with this toy, though.
But as you already guessed, there might be a problem on the 12Vdc rail.
This will affect all the mechanical action inside the drive as for the spinmotor and the headspindle.
You propably might try another PSU if it has the 4-pin power-connector like on 1541-II and 1581.

My clue: unplug PSU from mains, open it and locate the 3-pin Transistor reading 7812 (or similar). Desolder and measure with simple Multimeter on Diode-Test mode. Or replace it instantly with same or compatible type. Also have a look at the compensator connected to this 12Vdc-rail. If it is bloated or has white crust on the bottom, replace it (actual compensators are smaller but with same readings).

But let the other hardware guys speak here, too! Good luck.

it's actually a 5 pin din not the 4 pin so I don't have another psu to try.

ill try doing what you said or I may try to make another psu similar to what I did with my 1541-11

cheers

drive is now fully working again.

I made a new psu.

got a new switching psu with 5v and 12v and chopped the 5 pin connector off it. tested which cables where 5v 12v and gnd.

chopped the cable from the commodore psu and tested which cables where which.

then joined all wires from the new psu to the cable from the chopped commodore cable with the 5 pin din and Voila.

new psu working with correct voltages and drive is now operating properly again
