c64 goes quickshot!

the new york times web edition covers an interesting story about a 30year old engineer who figured out a way to run the complete c64-chipset in one single joystick. maybe you know that stuff from the atari 800xl-joystick, iirc. nevertheless, the story can be found here: http://news.com.com/2100-7337_3-5497584.html

sadly, it isn't mentioned when this item will be sold overseas resp. the names of the five games included. maybe someone here already has this handy little toy already and can tell us?

The six (?) hidden games I believe are gems from the past MiniGame compos - i.e. Minima Reloaded, Splatform, Cliff Diving, Astrostorm, dwCave and Tinyrinth. Of course, there are about ~30 "real" games, accessible from a menu so those titles mentioned above are more like Easter eggs from what I understand.

It seems that the DTV isn't for 100% compatible with the 6510; not every (illegal) opcode is emulated and some of the included games were "fixed" to work on the dtv.
On the other hand we get 256 colors now.

Interesting usenet thread, btw:

Hey, a little inside info:

The PAL version of the stick is under development. Nearly all illegal ops are now working. Trying to improve the cycle-exact compatibility now of VIC and 6510. One-der and Dawnfall are running 100% now, though more cycle precise stuff is currently having trouble, like Deus Ex Machina. (Really, this isn't necessary just to run the ~30 games included, but we'd really like to see a very high level of compatibility).

256 colours is one bonus, also, an onboard REU-like DMA controller has a lot of potential. Besides just moving data quick, it should be able to do logical operations on the data still at one byte/cycle (and possibly faster). There's also some linear video modes with alternate layouts. At least 128k of RAM, it may work out to include a *lot* more. New stuff to play with for those interested.

I was really impressed about the diskdrive-pc-keyboard hack... Maybe I will get dtv someday.... Fortunately I have my about 20 c64's.... :::::::))))))
