You might use emulators, but you cant beat the real thing, especially for demos.
If you want to experience c64-demos, you might also use your DVD-Player.
demo-dvd-sampler (german): http://www.forum-64.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=4796

Some Guys from "64er" are (were) also part of the scene, but this is not the place to discuss "pc"-related stuff. look at pouet.net

I don't know speeddos, but you could try searching for "action replay" here. In the rar you'll find a lot of cartridge-images (*.crt-files) that works with emulators. Press ALT+Z instead of ALT+M to go to the cartridges monitor (well, to freeze actually). I guess ActionReplays monitor is similiar to the one in speeddos?
(and yeah... i never found VICE's monitor useful for anything else than setting breakpoints :). It's hard to browse the memory with it)

Also, the build-in monitor of CCS64 (another emulator) is pretty similiar to normal monitors. You should check CCS64 out aswell.

I use CCS64, control-M kicks you into the monitor. :)

I was never fond of Vice but I'm probably bias.
