CMD HD
Is there a way to copy files from my CMD HD to WinXP?

Not that I know of, no. If you find out a good and efficient way, I would love to know.
Star Commander can not be used, I've tried. I find it a bit strange, since the CMD HD is rather 1541-compatible, but all I get is time-outs.
Copying the stuff to 1581 disks and then reading the 1581 disks with 1581copy on the PC is a bit tedious, I'm afraid...
If Graham would adapt his Netdrive program to allow writing to the PC Server and not just reading, that might have been an option... |

Wasn't the CMD HD a SCSI-drive? So, maybe there's a driver/module for linux and one can attach it to a PC this way. Just a stupid thought of mine... |

I'm told that you can use an X-cable and Star Commander to copy files, but it's damn slow.
<FungusN0S> you have to set star commander to snail mode
<FungusN0S> and you MUST run it from real dos, not win98
<FungusN0S> I have dos 6.22 archives for this purpose

Only thing I can suggest is someone write a file copier for the PC that can import and export files from a image of the hard drive..
My experience with XM cable from a CMD HD connected to an Windows XP machine running at 2.8 Gigs was similar to what Moloch suggested.. I tried using Star commander and cbm4win, all ended in the same painfully slow process..
Even DriveGhosts partition transferring capabilities seem to be this painfully slow..
I've heard that transferring .d64s via the RRnet between a c64 and a PC was fast.. Wonder if this could be modified to do CMD HD file transfers? or speed atleast speed up their snoball pace..
You might try this situtation: Get yourself a Linux distro and use the DD command to image the CMD HD drive to a PC.

Driveghost is indeed painfully slow... it's faster to filecopy everything to disk in that case, which says a lot about the inefficiency of driveghost... |

Wonder if some versions of Star Commander work and some dont? Or maybe it depends on the ROM of the HD? I use SC with my CMD HD with no problems.. dont have to put it on slow mode like Fungus does either. Takes just a few seconds for a file in the area of 150 blocks.
Some of the file sizes dont appear properly in SC, but sending commands like change partition and change directory all work fine for me. |

So, Fuzz... what version of Star Commander do you use then? Sounds interesting, perhaps I should try again some day. |
