Rewriting 5.25" disk - will it wear out the disks?
Since I got a MMC64 I've been using the D64 writer plugin to write all demos to disk and watch them on the real thing (too much hassle before with cable, but now with the MMC64 it's so quick and nice!).
Anyway, I've been using the same couple of disks over and over, and I started thinking, how many complete disk rewrite cycles will these last? Don't want to wear them out since it's kind of hard to find new 5.25" disks to buy nowadays...

That depends totally on the age and the quality of the disk. Some of the swapdisks I have, which have been circulated bigtime, does often have atleast a few sectors here and there which are faulty. A disk I used for an installation got errors on the file just by reading, over and over again.
Don't worry, though. There are still new disks to be found. Just take a peek on eBay. Athana are still able to produce new ones, and a big batch was imported to Germany some years ago. |

The disks I'm using now are the newest ones I have, that is I got them from a friend who bought them in Germany in '91 or '92 I think... :)
Actually the data resistency seems to be pretty good, many of my old disks from late eighties are still readable, so it seems atleast as you don't use them much, they are fine.
Well, good to know that there is still disks to be found. If all else fails I can start reusing my old disks that I have old games and demos on, since the stuff can be found on the net nowadays anyway. |
