Checking old Disks
I've got a problem with some old Disks to check them physically.
Disk Checker works fine, but most still don't work. Is there any
other prog or solution around besides "verify format" to have
some more working disks again ..? /THX |

Anyone remember Disc Creator? I used it a lot, had a bunch of features including verify (I think). I don't see it on CSDb though, I should have it someplace... |

So 'Disc Checker' or 'verify format' should work!? I wonder why still over
30% that passed have still errors 5minutes later.. but I have to admit
that's all bloody old disks in not very good condition.
1541 II is software-aligned to "Commodore Demodiskette".. Sure, they are all 48TPI DD.. |

just a trick we often used:
if the disk is broken, eject it and keep it in your hand like you did when getting it out the floppy and SLAM it on the table (flat of course ;) )... insert it again...
helped with aprox. 50% of all broken disks :D

Hmm, I tried this with about 13 Disks but noone did work again.. Shit, not even headcleaning works.. so the magnetic surface must be damaged.. tried them in another drive,too.. Halleluja, what a bloody mess.. it must be the disks.. out of order |

hey markus if you need any 5.25 floppies let me know i have tonnes
but a good trick with them is this.....hold this disk in your hand....use the other hand and put your 2nd hand in the middle of the disk.....try to manually make the magnetic material spin round a couple of times.......sometime problems occur with these disks because they become stuck inside and dont spint correctly....
nothing ventured nothing gained in my eyes |

Yo, I would like to buy at least 450kg of those disks! If you offer a decent price for an old warehouse green baron demo collecting alien, that would be nice. PM is on the way. Otherwise i simply use that disc-wizard to create new ones.
"Some say it could work, some say it does not, I say, I couldn't believe anyway." ehrm, =8-). o_O .(-8= /Markus |

For discs, I did pick up lots and lots of old 5.25" on Ebays around the globe, most ppl used to sell off 100-1000 discs very cheap with all kinds of old PC files. Format and reuse! |

Jep, but attention, some disks I bought were that dirty i even could'nt see(!) I had to clean my drive 'isoprophyly' afterwards. Some work fine, BASF mostly (?!) .. And some (really about nearly half I bought) did that strange 'nonamenoises' shh shhh shhhh.. - you know. I'm wondering, it was Sony Disks, Verbatim and even Nashuasha . Is it the plastic casing, damaged by too much heat ? Too much varying humidity ? Or was it just the kids who played too much with the 'wrapped with transparent foil paper boxes' ? ;) Who knows ?.. |

u might find some of the disks are HD disks also.. and not DD etc. 1541's HATE them, a friend sold me a load years ago the b*****
as for disks, i have a 1541 / 1541-2 / 1570.. the best drive out of all 3 is the 1570, it reads pretty much everything, even if the other drives say they are errored.
I've used alchol on the drives to clean the heads as I've had them since 1990 I guess. although one is still playing up, i'm not sure exactly of the problem.

Jep, HD Disks are very 'loud'.I can hear every of them in any drive(okay, 91,1314%;)That's what I forgot to say, beware of HD Disks aswell ! Some who aren't
labeled you can sometimes identify on a lack of (v.bad english) ring in the middle.Yeah, 1570, I don't have one. So it is dangerous to clean drive heads with alcohol
(not spiritus!)?? Sometimes the old 1541 get out of line if you run them too long bcoz of the power supply, maybe the iron is melting. I had just too many errors on disks
that's why I was asking. When I was working on "frog" after some save/delete the Verbatim disk was nearly dead. And I have 3 Floppys.. Like in Altered State 50%;/) OKay, that last question was about the noises old disks do.. And maybe I give the answer myself, it's the sleeve, becoz of too much heat or production failure(?)..I'm not even clear about the error check, on the Amiga it is lets say halfway sure ..
anyway, letz close this one, someone should release a yearly CSDB msx/and-or/gfx collection, there are so many rels that get fairly lost.. just an idea .. |
