worst arcade conversion?

maybe this topic is a tad lemon-ish.. what was the worst thing ever ported to c64 from arcades?

obviously its easy to mention things which were good, bubble bobble, combat school, hypersports...

but which were really dire..

i remember playing a lot of the the konami ports, that were really bad... jailbreak springs to mind straight away. oh and karnov, and seeing the original r-type, both spectrum ports (thankfully trenz did version 2)

or perhaps maybe you could admit to playing a game that was dire that everyone hated that you actually enjoyed..

Zzap!64 (or maybe it was CF) ran some images of Karnov showing graphics created exclusively for the C64. By the looks of things, these were never used, and instead the C64 got the same game that appeared on ZX Spectrum. Which was good, for a ZX Spectrum game, and less impressive for a C64.

Iron Horse and Ragar are two games that 'should' have converted well to the C64 and some how were not :(

Along with Space Harrier and Power Drift, Buggy Boy is another good conversion interms of capturing the spirit of the orignal, without necessarily emulating its looks accurately.

I remember playing the arcade version of buggy boy on holiday.. it did look like the amiga.. very massive graphics..

but suprisily i prefered the 64 one.. reminded me a lot of the arcade, but more a hybrid with say pitstop 2 =)

they didn't stay stictly to the arcade, but in ways in that case it was a good thing I think.

Horrid conversions... there are so many. I have to agree that Street Fighter II is the absolute worst conversion. The USA version of the first one was far superior , although still not very great. At least the graphics were good and you could use SOME of the special moves.

Shadow Warriors is another terrible conversion (I know I cracked, and I played it in the arcade). The c64 version seems half complete, some of the powerups are missing, and you can't even get the sword! It makes the game impossible...

The American version of Bionic Commando is hideous.

Side Arms SHOULD have been done very well on c64, but the conversion (done by Canadians) is just bloody pathetic! That goes for Gunsmoke too...

Games that shouldn't have been doable, but worked well. The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade (or TMHT to you euros). Final Fight from Capcom was pretty impressive.

I´m surprised Pit Fighter hasn´t been mentioned yet. Very fast very bad conversion.

The Karnov preview screenshot in ZZAP looked a lot better than the eventual released version, which ported graphics over from the Spectrum.

There was also a letter a few months later where someone drew their own graphics for Karnov on the C64...

Mag Max and Galivan from Imagine/Ocean deserve burying in concrete too.

As I got the MAME with a full ROM set, I was doing some research lately. Bad things on the C:

After Burner
Golden Axe - Really sucks on the C=
Street Fighter

Toki (or Juju in Japan) was simply ugly compared to original.... :(

And that game could been perfectly converted to c64...

These days when you can play everything in Mame, even the 'greats' like Bubble Bobble don't seem that special anymore. I do tend to miss the C64 tunes though; Commando and Bionic Commando wipe the floor with the arcade versions!

I seem to disagree with some of you on this topic...

Fungus: You actually liked the c64 conversion of Final Fight? For me, that one is up there alongside Street Fighter 2 battling for worst conversion ever! I stick with the arcade originals of those two any day. Although the SNES port of Final Fight is very good if you're home alone. If you have friends, the lack of 2 player support was dissapointing. :)

There have been many good conversions too, that in some cases are better on the c64 than in the arcades. I actually think Golden Axe on the c64 is more playable than the arcadeversion, despite the lack of 2-players. The controls are better, the music is better and it has a lot of spirit. And mind you, I actually very much like the arcade original aswell.

Another example of this is 1942, the c64 version is better than the arcade to the extent that I was almost dissapointed when revisiting the arcade original after having played the c64 version a lot.

As always with games, taste does differ.. :)

G-Loc, Afterburner 2, was really hideous. The two versions of Street Fighter and Street Fighter 2 wasn't exactly brilliant. Yie-Ar Kung-Fu 2 was outright horrible, Chase HQ sucked, Crazy Cars was bad. Hmm, must have forgotten some really horrible bummer. Jailbreak was outrageously bad.
