Getting a C16/116/Plus4?

Alright, I know that this is off-topic for CSDB, but I thought there might be people here who have the info.

In my ever-continuing quest to code a demo for every platform that has ever existed, I have been beginning to look towards the C16/116/Plus4.

Some questions arise:

* Are they very rare? I have been looking at Swedish auction sites and not seen any for sale. Ebay Germany seems to have a few, but I'm not very good at German and it seems like noone wants to ship outside of Germany.

* Which model to get? The way I understand it the hardware capabilities are the same, but the amount of memory differs (16kb vs 64kb for the Plus4). Is it common practice for demomakers to support the 16kb models?

* Diskdrive etc. As I understand it they use the normal IEC bus, so I should be able to use my Oceanic drive with one? And the disk format is the same as for C64, so I can transfer stuff to my C64 with MMC, write the disk, connect the diskdrive to the C16/plus4 and then business as usual?

* Video out. Is it the same as the C64, that is can I use my existing cable and 1084 monitor?

Get a Plus/4, this is the 64k version of the 264-series and the standard for demos.

As disk drive you can use any IEC device or a 1551.

Video out is the same as for C64, but Joystick ports are not.

If you are lucky you will even get a Plus/4 with round power connector. In that case you can even use C64 power supply units.

What Graham said.

Also, the C116 is quite rare. It was mainly sold in W-Germany back then so if you want to add it to your collection, that should be the place to score.
The only differences between the C116 and the C16 are that the C116 has a rubber keyboard and a Plus/4 look.

But indeed, it's better to get a Plus/4 and stick below the 16k if you want to be compatible with the C116/C16.

Moreover, you may ask into the right forum:

If you are lucky enough to score a C16 with a ram expansion (basically making it a plus/4 without the built in programs which are somewhat excessive anyway), that would be the optimal thing. The keyboard of the C116 is utter shite, even though it is my favourite in the 264 series when it comes to pure looks. The plus/4 keyboard is better, but the C16 tops it if you like the C64 keyboard.

And yes, Shadow, if you do anything for the 264 series, can I pretty please do graphics?

Thanks, looks like I'll look for a Plus/4 then. Keyboard quality isn't that big of a deal, I will probably do the normal crossdev/try in emulator then check final result on real HW.

No tips on where to find one? I guess my best bet is german ebay + babelfish? ;)

I was going to check plus4.emucamp.com (most of my google searches pointed there) but it was down. Seems to be back up again though.

And Archmage - I was actually contemplating whether I could lure you into this project as well, good to hear that you are on board! Plus/4 demo release in 2009 or 2010 it is then! :D

-edit- and now the plus4 site is down again. At least I could load the forum index once...

Use the Yape emulator. That's the best 264 series emu around.
Avoid the Vice +4 emu which sucks big time.

Yep, we had some troubles these days, should be better now :)

Yes, YAPE is the most common and friendly 264 machines'emulator, even though Istvan Varga's heavily running "Plus4Emu" is claimed to be almost 100% closer to the real iron.

My experience is that most people actually are willing to ship to other countries if you just ask nicely

Ask around on folkvagn, someone might be selling. They show up on Tradera every now and then. They're very common on ebay.de.
