Silly Question, sorry!

Hey y'all!

I'm sorry, I believe this is a silly question, please don't laugh, I'm pretty new in Commodore stuff and I really don't know it:
Why do I always find ".sid" files, when I'm looking for C64 music on the Internet?
I wanna have the music from the C64 game "AIRWOLF" on my PC and I wanted to download it from the net. But all I can find are .sid files and no one of my PC music players can play them. I asked some PC freaks, but they've never heard of this file format.
What is it and with which player can I use those files?
Are there any ".wav" or ".mid" files of the AIRWOLF-music?

Thanx!
Greetz, Airfish

That's what brothers (+sisters) are for - annoy the hell out of them.

I do agree that people should learn the power of Google.

Well, yes, I have downloaded a sidPlayer, but my PC always tries to open .sid files in RealPlayer, that doesn't work since RealPlayer is unable to read .sid and I can't open the file in the SidPlayer. How can I separate the file from RealPlayer and open it in SidPlayer?!

We have no idea of OS etc. XP atleast you have the option of right clicking > open with then find the exe of the sid player or choose program. You can always mess with file associations too, I guess all 95+ would be in explorer, folder options and somewhere in there (it isn't too hard)

Or simply put a link to Sidplay2 on your desktop and drag'n'drop the sid files onto it.

As to the answer of WHY .sid exists :

1 - they are smaller then mp3's or wavs.
2 - THEY CAN STILL BE PLAYED ON A ORIGINAL C64!!!!
3 - we like to make it hard for non-sceners ;-)

Er, mostly... yes. ;-)
Apart from the ones in HVSC with a _PSID.sid extension. They were in fact tailored to be played on poor resource computers with libsidplay1 based players.
But in the near future every _PSID.sid will have a C64 compatible counterpart as well, so the digi freax can enjoy those on a real C64 as well.

There are also some tunes that are not PlaySID specific, work well under Sidplay2/w but refuse to work properly on a real C64. The number of them should considerably decrease after the forthcoming HVSC Update #36. :-)
