Hosting floppy collections

To prevend a hijack of the Treasure Chest thread, I opened a new thread about hosting floppy collections.

As some of you know, we're looking for a way to have our floppy transfers available for the masses.

My own collection is near to 1GB of data. In online / webhosting terms, this is a rather large amount of data.
We're talking several tens of GB of data, I'd say, if not a few hundred.
If we want to add scans of covers to that, the end isn't even in sight!

So what we need is an affordable solution to store those gigabytes and also have enough bandwidth and allowed traffic to get it to the people.

After a quick investigation of webhosts, I found a Dutch one which has unlimited space with unlimited traffic for EUR 30,-/month. It looks reliable, but it's rather expensive.
Also, I'm not sure if you need to be registered at the Chamber of Commerce (which I'm not).

Then there's a shitload of hosts that seem less reliable to me (as in: hidden rules, spam-ish impression).
A list of those is on Top 10 Webhosting.

Yuu guys know any of these?

Also, please let me know what you think the 'profile' of both the host and the site owner should be.
We don't need some enthusiast who builds a site today and lets us down tomorrow...

I did, he didn't reply.

Also, ppl whispered that hosting floppy collections is not within the scope of Untergrund.net. As in 'warez'.

And here's another list of 'unlimited' hosts: Webhosting Unleashed.

If my house-moving plans come thru I''ll be able to host this on my own server from sept/oct on a 50Mbit connection.

Keep in mind *you* are hosting a lot of data which can hog your private Internet connection when it is getting popular.
I'll bet you don't want that so think it over before you offer such a thing.

I'll be able to do traffic shaping of it, so I'll be fine. Also, as enthusi mentioned, torrenting it might be an idea (I can just fire up a tracker and seed forever)

Actually, torrent would be a nice idea, as I can have my NAS seeding too.
Not sure about shaping the traffic though, so the risk Scout mentions might still apply for me (as it does now).

Well, for a torrent you can usually do shaping in the client. Also, if several people are on the torrent seeding, people can "come and go" and the downloads would just continue.

As a temp solution, I'll upload stuff to my web-host, but it'll get removed when I quit my job here in 2 months.

I'll edit this as I upload more.

Any host that offers "unlimited" anything is lying. Most certainly in their TOS is a fallback that will allow them to shutdown your account for excessive usage.

It's an old story this "unlimited" scheme. I've run servers for my clients since 1996 and have heard the stories for years now.

In the end, we're probably best with torrents. I'm willing to help with the seeding.

Indeed, no host truly offer "unlimited" anything - be it diskspace, bandwith, whatever. If you start using alot, they will have something in fine print in the Terms to stop you.

My difference is that I work for the ISP I use, so I'm able to host stuff and such, but ofcourse, all within reason. :)

I've put up more files:
