surely they supply +5V only.

Why useless? 1541-II/1581/CMD all take +12/+5.

Generally ATX PSUs supply only +5V over molex connectors. Since the C64 needs +12V as well, this does seem a bit useless.

Of course, I might be wrong.

The yellow wire of the 4-pin Molex connector is +12VDC.

The c64 takes 9v AC. THAT is the point.
You wont be running any tapes otherwise and you cant seriously want that??

i was only looking at disk drives so these things sound good enough to me for that reason only

The molex to din4 cable is cleary for drive power, if you followed the link. I have no clue why people are bringing C64 into the discussion, these cables aren't for C64 power.
