How do I connect my Linux box to my C64 ?

Hello there !

I've recently started work on a cross-assembler for the C64 (and in the near future probably other 65xx-based system as well.).

I'm now at the point where my assembler is working (macros, defines, include-files etc, a bit like C). The problem is: how do I connect my C64 to my (Gentoo-)Linux box ?

I've seen references to X(M)1541-cables and such, but which one should I build ?

My PC's BIOS supports all sorts of parallel-port modes, including SPP, so should a X1541-cable do the trick ?

Hopefully someone can shed some light on C64-PC communication, because I'm a bit lost.

Thanks, it's great to read about the C64 again !!

Bas.

XM1541's and similar are mainly for connecting a 1541-drive to a PC, not for downloading straight into the c64. There is software which can do what you want with that cable, but that will be slooow.
I have made a program to transfer code (fast) using a serial port on the pc to the c64. http://www.kahlin.net/daniel/over5/ There are some links to other transfering software aswell. Check here: http://ftp.funet.fi/pub/cbm/crossplatform/transfer/C2N232/cbmli.. for software that will run using a parallel cable. (faster)

Lots of other transfering tools and info: http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/crossplatform/transfer/transfer.html

HI.
I use cbm4linux and it rocks!
It connects a 1541 via XM1541-cable to the parport. It comes with several nice tools to get/put single files or whole disks and is nicely fast as well...
Its a kernel-module so you'll need the sources.
It works with 2.6-versions here. The XM-cable is iirc just like the Xe with two lines crossed...
It think this is very much the most comfortable way to transfer..
Have fun with it,
