SID Music/Sound Article

Hello.

I would like to have an article covering the SID music/sound as used in the C64 demo scene. This would be intended for a North American CBM printed publication. This article needs to be authoriative and pretty comprehensive. I'm looking for a ballpark figure of 2,500 words. I can't guarantee any compensation, but I'm hoping to provide a one year subscription to the publication as consideration for such an article. The publication and I will not retain any copyright over such an article; the author will keep all copyrights.

Basically, this article would cover the beginnings of music and sound as used in the C64 demo scene. Maybe include some C64 gaming influences on C64 demo music. Keep in mind that this target audience is for the North American NTSC user and they are used to hearing .MUS files as used in SIDPlayer. This kind of music experience is vastly different than the ones used in C64 demo releases. Hopefully they can learn more about SID music and sound as experienced in C64 demos and appreciate them.

Name dropping would be great; Give tribute to noteworthy composers and groups such as Maniacs of Noise, Hubbard, Jeroen Tel, etc. Maybe list a few ear-popping C64 demos that feature groundbreaking music, from which all future SID compositions are now judged against. Please include a C64 NTSC demo scene perspective on C64 demo music. List a few technical differences regarding SID itself such as the usage of filters.

I would also like for the article to cover what is still happening in 2003 with respect to C64 SID music and sound. For example, Chris Abbott has collected $20K UK pounds in royalties for SID composers. There are numerous music compos, either online or in parties, still being undertaken. List the HVSC as a source for C64 SID listening pleasure, etc.

While I am reluctant to do so, I may accept an article that has been written before to a disk magazine or a similar publication as long as it was very recent, is authoriative and seems to be comphrensive.

I have written a similar article regarding C64 graphics as used in the C64 demo scene. It is 2,900 words long, just to give you an example. If needed, I will show this article to interested authors of the SID article, to show this as an template of what I'm expecting from the SID article.

Send me a private message. Please list your qualifications for writing such a potential article as I prefer an experienced SID musician or coder with excellent knowledge of the SID chip and its history as used in the C64 demo scene.

Thanks,
-Todd Elliott

Hello.

Thank you for reading. Graciously, Merman has provided the article I was looking for! Thanks Andrew, for such a fine piece of work.

This topic can now be considered closed. :)

Enjoy.
