Quote:at least one of these program back in the days found a kernal rom failure. i didnt think the c64 was broken, i changed the kernal rom and i tested with a game where it shouddently showd the text for the trainer... with the faulty kernal rom all i could see was a black screen, when that screen appeared i just pressed the joystick button and the game begins i had no supisions about something was wrong at the time...
the diagnostic program simply was stupid and didnt notice that you infact had the old buggy kernal revision :) the rom itself probably was just fine =)
Quote:it should be able to find any broken stuff inside the c64.
no, not "any". that diagnostic cartridge is pretty simple infact. most fundamental stuff in the c64 has to work for it to work too, that is the cpu, the pla, the reset- and clock circuit, the vic and probably a few other things. faulty things it can detect is ram, rom and cias. the plugs are simple loopback dongles, mostly used to test the cias. the cartridge works without them (just cia tests will fail then). |

hey doc,
this afternoon I dug through some of my old disks and found a few test programs. There should also be one for the drive. Get the file test c64.d64 from here:

hope it helps.

Here's a short BASIC-listing (and D64) of a SID-diagnostic program. The good thing is that it tests waveforms and filters, and it can be typed in manually when you don't have a xfer-setup.

Just wanted to point out that at least some of above solutions requires additional hardware to perform all tests. Trilogic Doctor has additional loopbacks for serial and user ports for example. It's not possible to fully test c64 without those add-ons. |
