Release id #236627 : Ghouls'n'Ghosts +14DFGHI
I set this release as "broken" due to the discovery that on some real HW configurations, expecially with 1541 Ultimate+ cartridge, the game hangs with a black screen after the trainer menu. I already found where the problem lies and probably fixed it (still have to check better with my real HW) but my HDD crashed without any warning and so the priorities are now others.
A re-re-release will be made as soon as possible. Stay tuned but don't hold your breath. :)
Side note, on all VICE versions included the latest one I tried the release works as expected.
See you. Bye. |

Giulio/Wolf: Well. Does it work on real hw? That is the question. If it does, there is a problem with the Ultimate, not this release, and no fix should be needed from your side. |

It hangs on my real HW (real 1541 + C64 + datassette). So yes, a fix is needed. I received a PM that also on a real 128 it hangs. Sometimes the drive starts to load something but then it continues to spin forever.
As already said, on VICE all seems fine. |

So what was the problem? VICE should of course hang in the same place, if it hangs on real hw. |

Keep in mind when testing your next version:
First and last testing environment ('Vanilla') should be real C64C with 1541-II without anything else plugged but joysticks.
Anything else such as .CRT compatibility is something you can care about and test inbetween, but make sure providing .CRT compatibility won't kill vanilla performance.
And yeah, if you set VICE to real drive emulation,
indeed it should behave as a working real drive.
Though it doesn't seem to be the problem here, I'd like to point out that 1541 Ultimate+ etc. etc. ain't strictly speaking "real" hw in my book (I use TheChameleon or EasyFlash3, too, and they are wonderful - but I label them 'unreal' hw to distinguish it from original C= stuff). If 3rd party firmware etc makes trouble, inform developers by writing bugfeed as a) it's not a cracker's job to workaround such issues and b) developers are normally thankful for info how to improve their stuff. |

why 1541-II and not 1541? |

@Wolf, I respect ppl owning up to their bugs
crashes on vice 3.7.1 with dolphindos 2 fully enabled, both enabled/disabled fastloader.
so i'm guessing this is kernel usage related, perhaps on the drive side. ideally it should work with both (fastloader on/off).
all modern loaders work fine with dolphindos 2 (krills, spindle, bitbreakers, sparkle, nostalgia's many loaders, etc) |

It seems real HW dislikes a CLI when instead in VICE 2.4, WINVICE 3.1 and WINVICE 3.2 it is ignored and the 1541 starts to load without hanging.
I'm kindly asking if someone could test this:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/o1v1rmbapjg4nk8/GHOULSGHOSTS%252..
It will be uploaded as official release when I'll fix my HDD problems, in the meantime it would be great having positive feedbacks that it works as expected on your HW.
Thanks. |

For what it's worth, using Hoxs64 V1.1.2.3 the released Ghouls'n'Ghosts +14DFGHI doesn't load after the trainer menu, while the provided patched version loads.
Apart the different start of scrolltext, the Y/N selection in trainer is Y=green N=red, instead of always white, so the fixed version is noticeable. I'd mention the new loader fix in the documentation aswell =) |

Quoting iAN CooG> with 1541-II
why 1541-II and not 1541?
Not a biggie, but actually I prefer the 1541-II in order not to run into SAVE"@:..." bug due to old ROMs. Of course, it's smart not to use that routine at all as coder to ensure best possible compatibility. Can't remember when I last time encountered anyone using "SAVE"@:..." for Highscore-Savers, far more common to scratch properly and then save. Probably many affected hardware owners replaced their buggy ROMs by 1541-II EPROMs meanwhile, THEN it using it is of course fine. |
