To all emulator experts out there: why exactly is this working in CCS64 and not in WinVice or Hoxs?

interesting.... usual suspects in this situation are:
- (mostly the instable) illegal opcodes
- drive emulation details

the most important question would be... does this actually work on all real c64s?

in this case, since other "different" releases of this game DO work, and other "very similar" (not to say recracks) all show the same problem... and this crack isnt exactly great either, i would guess that maybe some part of the protection was not removed completely, ie illegal opcode stuff which is not exactly stable.

but indeed, it'd be interesting to know what exactly makes it crash :)

It seems to work with Vice (2.2, Linux) here when disabling cartridge. Don't mind the "crashed" screen, just move the joystick and your game will begin. Using a cartridge (Retro Replay ROM), the game will freeze (as in: "lock up") after each frame has been drawn. You can break out of this using the monitor, though. I haven't figured out why it locks up, though.
