Quote: Hi Flex,

I'm sorry to hear you weren't happy with the sound at our previous events. But you must admit, we've come a long way. From crappy bedroom speakers in the 90's to a pair of EON's, to two full professional PA systems covering two halls. All made possible because of you and all other sceners who are willing to pay 90 euro's for an all inclusive C64 scene weekend which is solely organized by volunteers.

Within the budget that is given to me I try to get a sound and light set to accomodate 300+ people as good as possible. To reduce transport cost, I have to rent the stuff from local companies which makes the amount of choices I have a lot smaller. So if it means I have to make due with a muddy subwoofer to be able to stay within budget, than so be it. I'll make the best of it and try to have fun, as that is why I'm doing this.
I too would want the X to be able to provide a nice high end PA at the party but unless everybody is willing to pay more, or more people show up that won't happen.

The last two X events, I had before hand (I think it was with Jammer) set the system EQ to compensate a bit for the muddy lows and we played all compo SID's with the same EQ settings on the desk (flat), which I think is only fair but I won't mingle in that discussion.

This time, because of the small entrance fee increase we now have sliced cheese and I had a little more money to juggle with aswell. I was able to get a setup that could turn out to be a lot nicer than the mackie set we had at X10 and 12. I have worked with EAW speakers before and in my experience they deliver. As they are rentals I don't know what state they're in, how old they are or how much beer has been pored in them but we'll see in oktober.

Fingers crossed ;)

Thanks for the reply.

In this case I myself can only talk about X12 (where I think esp. Randall's Hexaspeed did suffer from the settings) but in general, what I've seen and heard, the bass-button gets easily turned "to(wards) the max" until it just gets too much.. Many times it still works, until you play Linus for example.. :-)

Like in ZOO2013, every tune sounded great and "bassy" until Linus' "Grandma was a Druglord" was played and the subwoofer started begging for mercy. :-) Maybe the volume kept on rising in the compo or maybe it's just Linus' problem with making it so deep ;-) but I was a little ashamed that otherwise a brilliant tune didn't get the presentation it deserved. Therefore I'm pretty sure that testdriving the PA with such tune would only do good..

Don't get me wrong, I'm satisfied with everything you did at the last X and really can't wait to get the next party started. Also the competitions being held upstairs gives you my both thumbs up!

The easiest solution is to ban Linus from the competition. ;)

Quoting Randall
in 2010, i remember being invited, along with other musicians, to test and adjust the soundsetup before compos. i don't remember anyone criticizing the result. perhaps that's the way - let the most interested guys intervene :)

Damn right. Setup was really balanced and selective then, it's the best way to use the most badass and bassy tunes like Linus' ones as a reference.
