cracked or broken?

well this might appear to be an odd question but it has been bothering my mind since a while.
games used to be "broken" (remember; "broken by abc" or something similar), then all of the sudden games got "cracked" instead.
who came up with that term, "cracked by", and why did people stop using the term "broken by".
I know this is silly, but I was only wondering.

In the '80s it could have gone either way. However, sometime in the late '80s or early '90s, the term "broken software" became synonymous with "does not work" and thus fell out of favor.

I suppose the etymology could be a little difficult to track down. My first exposure to both of those terms came from the American Apple ][ scene in 1980-81 or so, but I have no evidence that the Apple ][ scene is responsible for the origins of either "cracked" or "broken" as defined by any given piracy scene.

However, I do strongly suspect that the terms are based on their definitions "to give in", IE "I will get him to break" or "I will get him to crack" and put in past-tense form-- "Broken" or "Cracked".

Funny to think if things had gone the other way-- Pirated games get a "breaktro" and people form breaking groups. You copy the break over from the break folder and go to Game Copy World to download the latest breaks.

Meh. We're better off with "crack".

This being my 1st post, let me first say, Hi! I'm Joe Bucci, a retired PC Tech., and a 'Working' (If you can call it that) Musician!

Anyway, like a lot of you I'm sure, VICE is my Emulator of choice. It's just the best, IMHO... BUT! I seem to feel that v2.1 is a bit more 'stable than 2.2!

Therefore, although I have them BOTH on my Hard Drive, v2.1 is my 'default' version.. I don't know what happened, I just don't like the 2.2 version as well!

Cheers!

Hi Joe - first of all, welcome! :-) On your issues with Vice, check this thread: VICE 2.3 has been released - 2.3 was released a while ago, and I guess this fixes the issues you are mentioning to some good extent. :)
Cheers,

i do remember an intro from 1991 (1991 was written in the middle of the screen, that's how i remember the date) which use the term "broken" but I don't remember the group. Intro had one 1x1 and one 2x2 scrolls and some raster effects. I don't remember any intros after 1991 using "broken" term.

"cracked or broken" reminded me "handle or nick". we used to call it handle and CSDB criteria is still named handle. but beginning from the mid 90s, "nick" replaced "handle" probably by the irc terms. i still like to use handle time to time but i usually ask "what's your nick?" instead of "what's your handle?" nowadays.

what about you guys, do you still use handle?

Handle the crack with care or it will be broken.

Is that clear, Nick? :-)
On the question: for me, "nick" has also somewhat replaced handle, which is kind of a pity; I guess it is mostly due to explaining the whole scene-thing to outsiders, who will not understand the term "handle" ("What do you mean, your handle? Like, your love handles?"). :-P
