cracked or broken?

well this might appear to be an odd question but it has been bothering my mind since a while.
games used to be "broken" (remember; "broken by abc" or something similar), then all of the sudden games got "cracked" instead.
who came up with that term, "cracked by", and why did people stop using the term "broken by".
I know this is silly, but I was only wondering.

Handle the crack with care or it will be broken.

Is that clear, Nick? :-)
On the question: for me, "nick" has also somewhat replaced handle, which is kind of a pity; I guess it is mostly due to explaining the whole scene-thing to outsiders, who will not understand the term "handle" ("What do you mean, your handle? Like, your love handles?"). :-P

The term handle may have been left over from the days of cb radio. I know alot of the colorful characters on CB radio's back in the 70's had different handles they went by. And I know handles were used from the early bbs days, so maybe that's where the term bled over from.

I think "Broken" was an American thing and "Cracked" was a rest of the world thing. I also recall just plain "Done by" in some versions.

Handle is a throwback to CB and Shortwave radio. It was indeed replaced by Nick in 90's and now in the 2000's it's more likely to be "Steam Name" or "Gamer Tag" =]

There were a ton of groups with names that included the words "Crackers" or "Cracking", but I can't recall ever seeing any groups with names involving "Breakers" or "Breaking". :)
