Donkey Kong Junior for C64

For those of you not reading lemon64 (can't blame you... :)

I'm proud to announce the imminent release of Donkey Kong Junior for the Commodore 64 (PAL and NTSC).

It's one of the classic arcade games of the early 1980s, but unfortunately never got a C64 release. We've spent some time to get rid of that problem.

The game will be available as a free download on Saturday, November 8th 2014.

What are you gonna get? A 100% accurate port of the Atari 7800 version, which is highly regarded as an excellent conversion of the arcade original.
Check out this review if you want to learn more about the game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ycvw-5r1JtI[/url]

The graphics have been done from scratch to the highest standard by STE'86 with hints taken from the arcade and the NES version, but tweaked to look best on the C64.
The music and sound effects have been painstakingly recreated for the SID by encore and complement the game brilliantly.

To make the wait until Saturday a little bit easier for you, here are some screenshots:

Nice.. Had this when I had a 7800.. I blew the 7800 up trying to get a 2600 game to work in it... Ahhh.. the good old days...

I always thought the Colecovision version was more accurate to the original?

Doesn't matter... Looks fantastic... Looking forward to playing it :D

I"m no gamer at all, but I admire the work that must've gone into this.

Next: Puzzle Bobble?

Looks great from the screenshots!
How did you go about developing this, could you reuse any of the 7800 game logic routines (it's 6502 based if I recall correctly...), or is everything recoded from scratch?

Yes, it's using all of the 7800 game logic, in fact it's pretty much executing a patched version of the 7800 ROM. :)

So does this mean we might see other 7800 games now with this hacked rom? Mr. Sid

Just wondering as it would be cool to see some of the Atari 7800 Larger games. Well thanks and we all seem to try and inspire you on other games too!.

Looks Awesome!

This looks really good, really looking forward to tomorrow!

Regarding other Atari 7800 games, the Pac-Man Collection homebrew released a couple years ago is freakin amazing.

Just wanna join in and say: GREAT!!! Looks perfect! - And has that chunky, colorful C64 touch that makes me love the C64 Donkey Kong the most.

What about Parasol Stars - the sequel to Rainbow Island:
http://www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/parasol-stars/

That would be my little wish for a game that doesn't exist on the C64 yet!

People. It's a mediocre-at-most game, you wouldn't even take a crap on it 15-20 years ago. What about the hype, or am I missing something?

To be honest, I could agree with Jailbird as much that personally I don't enjoy *playing* this game at all, which is more a fault of the original game concept and mechanics. Meanwhile the reverse-engineering, coding, graphics and sound work are all extremely respectable. Especially the graphics, where the C64-reinterpretation improves on the original.
