How to make a proper CSDB screenshot in VICE?

I have been warned about a improper screenshot from VICE, but I seem to be unable to make one. You can find my VICE 3.4 settings and enlarged screenshot I got from that here:

https://filebin.net/album/ljlvfq8z25z0oib5

It may be that my DE is to blame (Mate), but I do not want to change display options just because of VICE, as current settings are pleasing to my eyes.

In the end, I made a screenshot from Z64K's internal screenshot functionality, but that one gives 389x270 instead of requested 384x272.

Is there some included screenshot option in VICE 3.4 that produces requested output? I was unable to find it in the menus.

Cheers,
Zarko

I just had the same... what I found was that you need to have VICE set to “normal” borders rather than full. Sadly that means that many CSDB screenshots will be “cropped” - but I guess the reason for this is that it’s supposed to be more like a CRT view range rather than a monitor.

using "normal" border mode isnt enough - you also have to use a relatively recent VICE, because older ones do not produce 384x272 in normal border mode either. And chances are that after my renderer rewrite (that will happen next year), those dimensions change yet again. Also screenshots may be changed to use the actual rendered display as source, so they will include the proper aspect ratio and CRT effects.

(and yes, "normal" border mode is supposed what typical CRTs show... "full" is supposed to show the range a proper monitor "should" show)

Isnt it a funny requirement? :)

Specific screenshot dimensions down to actual pixel counts is a ridiculous requirement, which is nicely illustrated by the fact that different emulators and specific versions produce differently-sized screenshots. Not to mention that VICE currently won't output accurate pixel aspect ratios on any video system.

As for full border mode, this is based on the maximum known visible area across any kind of display device. This very often shows bugs in extreme border regions, some of them not avoidable even with the author being aware of the issue.

So for most intents and purposes, normal borders (typical viewing area for non-adjustable CRT TV sets of the day) is the best choice for screenshots.

Yes, I have set VICE to Normal borders, but when I do a screenshot of the VICE window, the image inside is antialiased. I'm guessing that it is because of my DE and how it works, so I'm guessing no amount of tweaking VICE will give me proper screenshot.

Does VICE have maybe integrated screenshot saving? If not, is it maybe planned? Not a big deal, of course, I can always use Z64K for that in the future.

Groepaz, thank you for your answer, I have thought that it is for some video recording or something. I should have tried that before asking, sorry. Will remember it now...
