selling cracked releases?

as i never really was involved in the scene in the old days, i wondered if cracking groups sold their releases? i mean, like on a regular basis or only sometimes?

i browsed the web for a while and couldn't find anything that is clear about that point.

of course, there's a lot of fame involved having the newest stuff released as quick as possible, with a neat intro, eventually bugfixed and maybe cheats, but was it all about the fame? was the scene that idealistic?

Yeppa...

In the early years the nowadays laws didn't exist. And therefore those people and groups of course sold stuff.

But you have to separate those into two groups. On the one side those once selling it to get money for new originals, disks, phonebills and so on. And on the other side people selling stuff for earning money. The best example for the last group is Headbanger. Surely one of the biggest seller in germany back then.

Later on the laws changed and therefore a lot of the early ones quit the scene. New groups got bigger and bigger and so the groups got more money inside the group and haven't to sell that stuff so much anymore.

Stay rude, stay rebel!

Also, if you paid for your warez you were definitely a lamer.

Most warez were spread on boards, by mail or at copy parties. For free.

The scene is all about fame and ideals. However some people seem to have forgotten about that.

Well, we had that discussion in the car on our way to Holland. So obviously there was at least one of us in the car who sold cracks to lamers to refinance the originals. Fair enough. Although I agree with Scoutie that the bottom line of the scene is something beyond money of course. No doubt.

The ultimate lameness must then be to sell warez you've payed for. :)

lamers or not but paying for a sky high modem bill, or just pay a few dollars for 100 disks with games in a year was cheaper for some back in the days....

LOL!

i totally agree :) people who pay for leech accounts so they can make wares dvds for selling them... lowlife scum. this kind of people are also those who make piracy a real problem, since they provide wares to people who want to actually use them, and who are willing to pay for them (aka potential customers).

Me and some of my local friends bought warez from Razor/Oneway around 1988-1989.

We for sure were lamers those days :) All of us around 11-13 years old...

I always stole my warez from the toy store. The last thing I stole (which was activisions game maker) set off the door alarm and you should have seen how fast I ran.

At that time, I would only pay for those wonderful mastertronic games. You know how that went? Pay for one, steal 4. They had those tiny little binder cases... Fun times indeed..
