Dungeon Crawler Mapping: Virtual Graph-Paper, Etc....?

I wanna be able to myself map my way through old cRPG Dungeon Crawlers like Wizardry, Might & Magic, and The Bard's Tale, etc., but without the having to have and use real graph-paper and pencil or pen and stuff.

How is this done? Are there any particular programs that do this well? ??? And I don't mind if it's a Win32-side program that could help with this....

I've been using it to create a map, the result of a cartography expedition, a task that now continues, of the first level, under the Castle, of the Mad Overlord's "Maze", in Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (this one).

It's great, very close to 100% of everything I need. However it would be great if there were a marker for an Encounter. There is one for Battle, but of course in games where not all one can encounter is hostile or "Evil", Encounters don't necessarily equal Battle, see.

Thus is the area that I've located so far:

W23H23x24fdark-gray,x2f0hthick-wall,v2zf1h0zf0h2zf1h0zf0h2zv0x2h0v2zv0zh2v 2zvdoor,zv0zv3zv0zv3zv0zv2x2h0zv0x2h2v2zv0zh3vsecret-door,zh2v0zh3zh2zmbattle,h0 v3zm0v0x2v2zv0zv2zh4zmloot,zm0h2zv0zh0v2zv0zh4v2zv0zh0v2zv0x2h3v2zf1h2zf0h3zh0zf 1h2zv0zf0h0v2zv0x2v2zv0zv2zf1h2zf0zm5v3zm0h4v0zh2v3zv0zh0v3zv0zv2zv0x2h2v2zv0x2h 0v2zh2zv0x2f1v2zf0h4zh0zv0zv2zf1zf0zf1h2zv0zf0v2zm5v0zm0v2zv0zh0v2zv0x2v2zv0zm5z m0h3v3zm5h0zm0v0x2f1v2zf0x2v0zv2zf1zf0zf1zf0h2zv3zh3v0zh0v3zv0zv2zv0x2v2zv0x2h3v 2zh0zv0x2f1v2zf0x2v0zv2zf1zf0zf1zf0zf1h2zv0zm5f0h4v2zm0zh0zv0x2f1h2zf0v2zv0zh0zf 1h2v2zf0zf1zh0v0zf0v2zfgray,zf0v0zv2zf1zf0zf1zf0zh2zm5v0zm0v3zv0zh0v2zv0x2h2v2zm 5h3v0zm0h2zh0v2zh2v0zh0v3zm5h2zm0v0zh0v2zmnote,zm0h2v0zh0v2zf1zf0zf1zf0zm5h3zm0z h0zv0zv2zv0x2v2zv0x2v2zv0zv2x2v0zh3v2zh0zv0zv2zf1zf0zf1zf0x3m5h4x2m0h0zv0x2mstai rs-down,h2v2zm0v0x4h3zh2x3h0x2v2zf1zf0zf1zf0zf1h2zf0h0zf1h2zv0zf0h0x3h2x9h0v2zv0 zh3zh2zh3zh2zh3zh2zh3zh2x2h0v4zv0x2h2v2zv0x8h0v3zh2v2zv0x9h0x3v2zh2zv0zh0v2zh2zv 0zh0v2zh2zv0x2h0x13v2x2v0zv2x2h2zm5h3v0zm0h2zh0v2zv0x14v2x2v0zv2x3v0x2v2zv0x14v2 x2v0zv2x2h2v0x3h0x15v2x2h2zm5h3v0zm0h2zh0v2zv0x17v2x3v0x2v2zh2zv0x2h0v2zv0x13v2x 2h2v0x3h0zv2zm5v0zm0zv2zv0x13mtown,v2zm0h2v0x6h3zh2zh0v2zv0x13h2x9h0x36

It seems to be an area 20 by 20, which is 0 thru 19 North, and then East.

See the "Battles" at 14 by 17 & 13 by 16? I should double-check, but I've encounted two groups of Kobolds, one group at each marked spot, "friendly" ones. I think maybe they live there....

P.S.: Damnit! Didn't mean to make the damn forum scroll, goddamnit! But there are no carriage-returns in that alphanumeric string, and I even tried the [ code ] tags. :/ hehehe

Not sure what you mean on "encounter" in this context, but sounds like the "Info" symbol offered on that editor, hm?
Of course you could just dl the source and add own symbols - as it looks quite easily.

Nah, not Info, necessarily, for that.

In RPGs an Encounter is meeting another group or an individual. All "Battles" are Encounters, but not all Encounters result in combat, or should (or even can), depending on the game--there are quite a few games where you have the option upon an Encounter to do something other than fight the monsters, or whatever one (or one's party) may Encounter.

I can either F)ight the afore mentioned Kobolds, or L)eave them there where I Encountered them. But I should double-check that maybe I would always Encounter them there every time I pass through.

And as far as editing the available source-code, maybe it would be easy, sure, I guess, if I knew like HTML(?)....

Furthermore, I had to substitute a "Settlement" for the Castle at 0 by 0 on the Map I'm making--the Castle contains a Healer, an Inn, and a Shop (and can be reached by Stairs Up, depending on how one may decide to mark that) all in that one spot.

And being able to number the grid-squares, such as along the side of what's mapped, and being able to create perhaps a special legend for like Notes and such special places on the Map would also be great.

@Winston: It's really simple however... Just check the mapmaker.js file, right at the top. It's quite obvious how to add another mark. Then simply adjust the marks.gif file with your new marks and connect the name in the js-file with the position in the gif via the css-file called style.css. Just check it, it's VERY obvious even for a non programmer with no knowledge of JavaScript, HTML or CSS.

Oh-no! Something is wrong! Clicking the link above now goes to some page on SourceForge where apparently the raw files are stored. What the hell!?

Ow, crap! What does that mean? What do I do now? ???

Just click on "Download Snapshot". Depack it and point your browser to the index.html file contained in the package to run it locally on your own computer...

Oh-oh! Now I get a little dialog-box saying like "JavaScript Alert: No storage capabilities are allowed - maps will not be saved" and when I click "OK" the legend comes up, but not the map. Under the legend, the page says: "Expected width at the start of the board code but encountered u."

What could it be now? ???

Seems that the utility uses web local storage if available (HTML5) or cookies to save data. This is probably disabled when running locally. Download a web server of choice and actually host it locally, that should fix it. Or put it on some free web-space and surf to it properly.

Ah! I have it working from my local system now. The problem was my web-browser. My default is Google's Chrome, but it only seems to work (as is) in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Bummer!

I mean great that I got it to work after dickin' around like an unsavvy idiot with trying to host a free website on the Inet, which I couldn't get to work, despite hours of pouring over the service's help files. But bummer that it doesn't seem to work in my default Chrome, which is great for everything else I've done on the Web. But it doesn't, for reasons that are beyond my technical keen. I wish it did though!

Okay, so that step is resolved, and I can rollback to the previous one above, as needed, maybe later or somethin' hehehe

Thanks, JackAsser! You are a good dude, and not really a jackass, as far as I'm concerned hehehehe
