THE MOVERS Treasure Chest II

hello dudes,

fresh from my red hot glowing 1541-ii disk drive - another transferpack (finished some minutes ago..). i got the disks from a friend with his c64.
246 transfered disk sides in the pack.
that was a bloody work - some (bad) hd disks and pc disks where in the box. some of them makes my drive crazy.

HOT!!

After a huge process of obtaining the collection (over 3000 disks amongst other things), I'm pleased to announce that part 1 of the disk collection of the late Derbyshire Ram is now available to download.

Part 1 contains over 1000 disks converted to PC. It also includes photos and a nice note-file explaining the process that we underwent to bring this to you.

Reactions, errors, requests, please send me a mail!

About my disks I supposed to be not so lazy but I was wrong ... with my work and my lil' daughter time is gone away. Maybe is 'cause I'm gettin' older (42 years and life!), in my golden period with 64 (1986-1992 snail mail and 1992-1995 modem tradin') I was so fast I usually managed 20 packages a day and 2 lines tradin'. That's why my collection grow up reaching about 15000 disks (all packaged in boxes but who knows if it's now a cultivation of mushrooms?) many offered for a transfer (how long it will take?) but they are outside from Italy and sending costs are too high (in Italy 30kg goes for 10 euro).

Mustaine of HF offered too and he lives in Italy so maybe we will arrange something ... I wish to transfer also by myself buyin' a MMC Replay.
So I hope that this community can get all my stuff I'm sure something is missin' here. I traded with more than 1000 people (AMIga&64) around the globe so I'm sure that some useful intros/demos or crack or trainers can be find. My first 200/300 disks were epurated from ridondant stuff ... all the others come as they are so maybe there are same cracks that I got from TRIAD and other friends 30 x times!

If others in Italy wish to offers for a transfer and are trusted people are welcome to contact me. I wish to have my stuff back I love my disks are part of my life (some got stickers or groups envelopes) but I hope to share all the contents 100% error free?!?!

I dont have people in Italy that I know can transfer so many disks, but I know for I got some in Germany and Austria. They do a great job and ofcourse return the disks.

advertise "disks"/"tapes" that are available to be
transfered ?

- has 15.000 disks
- return disks afterwords.

This would make it easy for transfer-crews and ppl that

When I moved to a new flat last december the disks I got from The Enigma Man/AEK & Holly/FAME got mixed up with other disks I got from the german Ebay. Sadly, but therefore I am not able to separate those disks. But I transferred them into 4 packages named Unknown_001-Unknown004. And now it's time for package sharing with you.

First of all...

Happy Birthday Oliver!!!

And so here's on his birthday the final package of his disks. This package includes all disks I transferred. Some have been released some time ago. But in the meantime I got a drive with much better reading capabilities. So I did those disks again.

And for sure... The utility disks are included too...

So enjoy that piece of scene history now. Once again thanks to OTD for giving us his disks.

Here's another package with stuff from the 80s. This are the disks of Ayatollah & Fireman of The Newcomers. Skar was the guy who transferred those disks. Some disks are broken, but I hope you enjoy that stuff as all the other stuff given to ya. And don't forget to upload missing titles to CSDB.

Howdy, so this is the place on CSDb to put transfered disks, is it? I have trouble throwing stuff away, so I've transfered some 150 disks before reusing them for my own stuff. Still, I can't be bothered to go through them all. I know that there were a couple of Norwegian cracks in there (Bros) which I haven't seen on CSDb, but for all I know the rest is useless. The original plan was to up them to The Digital Dungeon, but from what I read there the disks have to be sorted and you can't up anything that is there from before - i.e. too much work.

thanks for sharing, anyway I tried from office (a linux box using firefox) and couldn't download it, stopped randomly after few hundreds of kbytes.
Now I'm downloading it at home using a download manager (flashget) that allows me to resume the download, but heck, stops every 200-500kb, so it waits 20 seconds every 1 minute =)

Yeah I had that same problem with Mace's pack, the server was disconnecting very frequently. So I just put the link into a download manager like GetRight and let it download (resuming after each break).

I started collecting proper dir designs fitting to their releases, also different dir designs of the same releases and different spreaders/swappers, so chances are high I often find usable stuff on xfered disks. Also some files are useful although they dont look at first sight, e.g. re-cracks from the 80s start with just a changed basic line, lame, surely, but still a collectors item. (Not to forget the BAM messages... *grin*)

disk 8 has jetbike sim by hscg which isnt on csdb...doesnt seem to work 100% but atleast it shows there is stuff on them disks of interest....expert mode works ok but standard version doesnt but will need checking by others

so please keep up the transferring archie :)

Today Earthshaker brought me 9 crates with floppies.
A quick calculation brings me to an estimate of 2500 disks!

I'm now in the process of building a parallel 1541-II with XEP1541 cable, because my old setup (1541 + XE1541 cable + StarCommander) just won't handle that kind of work :D

Don't expect too much from what i brought to Mace. Only a small portion of it is from my own collection, most of the disks is stuff which came with the computers i bought/got on fleemarkets and such. Back in the days i used floppies from my own collection to put amiga stuff on, so a lot is gone unfortunately. But who knows, maybe there is some interresting stuff on the disks, atleast i'm keeping Mace busy. ^^

A lot of the Derbyshire Ram transfered disks are faulty, another, experienced, person with different equipment should transfer them again.

Also, as you all know, many of Bod's High Voltage Disks are broken. I remember a rumour way back that guy threw his disks into the trash after transfering. Is that true?

It would also help if you were more specific in which disks were problematic. Also, make sure you get the second version of the disks, because the first one was converted with a nib2g64 converter that threw garbage in tracks 36+ if the original .nib file was only 35track

I've managed to transfer most of my little 200 disk collection and actually found some stuff not on csdb (will add more the following days).

so when i see all these packs - who sorts this all out? xfer takes some time, but checking back with csdb, adding info etc. - really lots of work.

and about broken disks: do you guys check them for dirt on surface or are they magnetically defect? (some of my disks were stored in a cellar for ages, 1 of 10 was broken. will try to fix, i guess some have un-csdb-ed stuff on em)

@zerozillion: about broken disks
3 main reasons:

1- old 15-23 years old disks are not guaranteed and if they were exposed to light cold/hot places the process of degeneration increase, mushrooms-batceria-magnetical defects increase the loss!
2- traded disks have been hitten hard from postmans, bent, pressed and so on so no way to save the contents
3- some programs from broken floppies were copied in new ones during the tradin' but the source programs doesn't work so the result is a non bumpin' head floppY but not workin' at all as it was in the original.

It's useful to clean the head of the disk drive (better a 1541II)

My procedure:
- Tools: 1541-II connected with a XAP1541 cable to an MS/DOS PC running StarCommander;
- I regularly clean the drive head with cotton swabs and alcohol (not potable ;) );
- I don't clean the floppies;
- When errors occur I try to do re-reads, but if too many errors remain, I switch to auto-skip.

when there is visible dirt on the disc itself and nothing else helps, i cut the sleeve open, clean the disc carefully with soap and medium hot water, carefully dry and put into a new sleeve. it can't get more broken than it already is ;)

at some point i wanted to build a "disc washing" machine, still on my to do list.

Transfered with StarCommander, this is the second and last box of the Culemborg collection: Culemborg 2 (15MB).

Why Culemborg?
It's the name of the town where the guy lived who gave this to me :)
The discs had a lot of errors and I often just kicked 'auto skip on error', to speed up the process.

Earthshaker's collection will be transfered using NibTools, to improve quality and speed.
First box will be up soon.

nibtools sound like the wrong tool for the job to me somewhat. its designed to get an accurate image of a disk *including* errors. for most transfer jobs (ie, unless you are doing originals) you probably want something that is designed to read the disk error free no matter what.

i use nibread because i get faster speeds for transfering.
speed is about 10 secs per 35track disk (warpcopy = 22 sec)
and - i can do it in my living room - without the need of a full c64 setup (that i can only do in my hobby room in the cellar)

if u have some 100 or 1000 disks todo - every second you save during transfer is good.

@tmb: pls send me and mdz your disks done with sc and with nibread - to see the difference (errors) or post them here.

sure - the result should be "best possible". not that i waste my time and the transfered disks are crap. if i can choose between disktransfering and f*****g ... dont ask what i like more ;) so - every second i have more for my family is more fun..hehe

Nibread actually boosts down to 10 seconds, i rushed the thing a bit, just for kicks, it took me about 35 minutes to xfer 100 disksides (=50disks). This includes all handling, inserting/removing disk.. Roughly 21 s per diskside (if i didn't miss that mathlecture in school)..

If we assume we are reading "normal" disks, and convert them from nib>.d64 you get a .d64 with errorinfo, the result is the same weither the program is designed to get an exact copy of a disk or not ?

If we are reading disks that are known to be originals, that is a different case.

..although, i haven't quite understand if there is a point saving .nib-files when reading/converting normal disks into d64 later on ?

Personally, i only run in DOS, i have some old machine for this purpose :)

so... nibread y/n ?

i am not sure how nibtools work, but generally nibblers do not try to interprete the data they are reading. that way they can read/copy data that has intentional errors etc, but the backdraw is that they can not decide wether an error is intentional or not. a program that only ever expects valid data can retry until all data has been read error free, a nibble generally gives up relativly quickly and assumes the data is supposed to contain errors.

so as for nibtools, i'd atleast make sure that there are options which allow me to disable all the magic and enable all errorchecking (which essentially would degrade the program to a simple parallel copier).

oh and - saving the .nib files makes sense indeed, so you can go back to them whenever you stumble about a d64 which does not work because the original disk used some strange loader, or uses 40 tracks for example.

Using SC for transfering crappy disks takes AGES.
So, like Swasti, I'm looking for a tool that does the job a bit faster. There are 3000 floppies waiting here...

NibTools has the option to reread on error. And the user can determine how many times.
So what Groepaz says, is not entirely valid here: NibTools _does_ know when there's an error, just like SC. But then, NibTools just copies them, while SC keeps nagging me.

In the end, both results have errors, but Nib took less time.
The drawback is that NibTools is a bit less user friendly than SC, especially in naming the files.

Well the reason why we started to look at nibtools to transfer the disks is because it autodetects 40 tracks if its there and it handle the special bytes.

Theres several examples where disks were transferred and we have to ask the owner again or wait till the disk shows up in some other disks so we can nibble transfer it using nibtools.

There can be a different way to handle the errors, but maybe its one of the thing the coder of nibtools should look at.

starcommander also autodedects 40 track disks if you tell it to do so

and before everything here goes specualtion, i would ask you to do a praxis test like i did.

take 20 of your disks that you know contain errors and transfert them
a) with starcommander error retry set to 100
b) nibtool

after that compair them and see for yourself on which disks more damaged stuff is, the ones by nibtools or the ones by starcommander

the whole point of transfering old stuff to save it gets pretty pointless, when its more important to you guys to have a job fast done, then to have a job good done.

think about it. (and make the test)

The method is to quickly transfer all disks, allowing for some errors, then sort and find special stuff.
If that stuff is on a bad disk, re-read the disk to try to fix it.

Tmb: I did not speculate my answer, I did testing disks
with certain errors and some without.

Only transfer programs that tranlate all errors correct
are: NibTools and StarCBM.

Comparing those two --> Only program that gets all bit : NibTools.

Any thoughts on best way to use the 1541U to convert to SDRAM (or via Ethernet enabled 1541U).

What program is suggested?

I recently obtained a 1541U, I will use it to convert a lot of C64 disks, any ideas?

I would suggest warpcopy, it works with 1541u as well once the new firmware is applied (in case you dont have it already)..

Well here is my first post to this forum. This is my 1581 disk collection. It has a variety of different things, mostly ntsc cracks/demos, etc. from my mail trading/bbs d/ling days. Most of the disks were pretty full, and should have alot to look through. It's a pretty big file, even 7zipped, but it's full of commodore goodness.

No problem. I've been meaning to up these for awhile, and have mentioned to others that I was backing them up, but figured it was put up or shut up time. BTW, have a ton more that I haven't posted yet, so will be working on them. These were the easier ones. Next I have to do my general games file, more utils, and up my demos, sids, and c/g artwork ones. Lots more to see, most of it US/NTSC stuff.

Jon,

Some of the files may be the same as the .d81's were from my mail trading days, as I mostly mail traded with Grundy(George Page) in Colorado. He was hooked up with the Gambler, and Dokken, since they were local to him, and he also traded with guys around the globe(as he was amassing his commodore hardware collection). So yes some of the demos will be the same, but we also traded alot of other things, so there'll be alot that's not in those disks. Also, on a related note, I'm going to post those disks up as well, so others can get access to them.

The Multisided games and the utilities are from my collection, so they werent in the other release.

To convert NIB til D64 download the newest nibtools
and the make a bat file:

[nib2d64.bat]
for %%i in (*.nib) do nibconv.exe %%i %%i.d64

and then put the nib2d64.bat and nibconv.exe into the
directory with nib files and run the bat file... vupti!

IMHO, my own transfer 'Earthshaker_Xfer_001' is not very good:
- some NIBs turn into 0 byte D64s, while they are working floppies;
- some floppies are missing;
- it's not clear which A side belongs to which B side from the NIbs.

Also thanks to Cruzer for his PM about this.
I'm doing them all over and will post a new archive with the D64 files.

thanks guys for the fast replys and answers , maestro sent me the .bat files and it worked like a charm . and yes some .nib-files turned into 0 byte .d64.

Notes can be useless, if they're only meant as a personal note on a swap disk.

But if it's a general note, it can contain valuable information about releases or historic information about sceners (if only their name and group).

There can't be enough notes in CSDb!

I gave this out a couple of years ago at ECCC, and it's my demo collection(primarily ntsc ones, many from that I traded as well as d/l'ed from us bbs's back in the day), my Commodore Graphics collection(that I cropped out of many ccgms buffer captures), and my sid collection. Sorry for the double messages, but since this is a slightly different tack, I thought I'd put it into a new message. Would there be any objection to my hosting/reposting links to alot of the packs that have been posted on here? The file hosting where I have been posting my backups is stable, and should be active for years to come, so I thought it would be a great place to store many of the files that have posted on here for download, as many last only a few days then are dead(rapidshare, etc.). Was just curious. I have 250 gigs online that can be used for this purpose.

heh well as soon the new site is finished. Until then theres a mirror on SH.

Problem is an accurate copy from today will quickly be unaccurate soon as theres alot of changes happening in the archive.

Its like I mentioned before that people who uploaded releases from the archive should crosscheck their uploads now and then - all to make sure the releases are accurate - otherwise when the site is ready then alot of releases has to be reuploaded.

Earthshaker's 2nd crate is transfered, but due to the rather large amount of faulty disks, I want to verify a few NIBs that returned 0-byte D64s.
After that, I will put all D64s online.

Simultaneously working on 3rd crate, btw.

TDD has size constraints for what we need for "collections" (as far as I recall when speaking with Burglar). CSDb has seperate entries; although it would be nice to have a collections-section here? Maybe one of the admins can investigate this possibility and what is needed?

The space/site would need to be the type that lasts, not a site that disappears after a year or two (otherwise what's the point). Something stable and dedicated.

I'm surprised no one has created it yet, considering preservation is one of the most important parts of the C64 scene in the last few years (and 'collecting' has always been valued).

Distributed storage shouldn't be too hard, we would need a central website to link to the collections.

I'm not sure about having collections in CSDb.
Fear the endless discussions about that...

Like, what credits?
We would need to add 'transfered by' and stuff like that.
And the release date?
Still we would need storage space (although I think the distributed way it is done now, isn't too bad).

Putting collections on file sharing systems is a bad idea as these links expire faster than the c64 software it contains. Also distributed servers might over time degrade because of people stopping hosting etc. Distributed servers plus several mirrors is already better. Another option could be peer-to-peer (with a big number of people keep them seeded 'forever') but peer-to-peer seeds also degrade over time. (Drives filling up, etc.)

Also a standard way of an index file for the collections, maybe even some way to search for specific file names is something I would like.

Also the naming should be a bit more consistent. some collections have just the name disks1.zip making it almost impossible to see the origin. Some have the source's name added.

Sometimes the same collection turns up under another filename or other archive format (or splitted in several files) making it seem like a different collection.

Seems to me its quite an undertaking to preserve these collections but worth a try.

Don't get me wrong but I actually delete the whole pack once the disks has been sorted. 95% of the cracks are already on CSDb or C64heaven archive at SH, the newly found cracks are ALL added, Mason can confirm.
Would be nice to know if the newly found mags and demos are being added aswell here, mags site and/or TDD, then the collections can be deleted safely.

I'm just keeping unmodified packs, don't get me wrong but I don't fancy downloading individual releases. That way it'll take forever. Also it's a bit like old school swapping getting surprises on disk :)

And there's always stuff that falls out of each category.

A Collection(pack) contains a value as a whole if it is
made from floppies/tapes. Info on how disks/releases were
spread etc and how many disks users had.

Further as a lot of releases on CSDB, TDD etc. are not
very well checked it happends that some files are
missing/bad... which first is indetifed later.
(think of that level 9 is broken in some game,
or maybe just some bad gfx in some level/item)

To my knowledge NO c64-preservation sites DO
preserve/consider data in a way so it satisfies
the basic requirements that is identified by the
task force on archival digital information that
made a list of stuff to be considered when digital
libraries(archives) are build.... so without
the original collections nobody can build a
better digital library becos we deleted
the information that is required.

If all collections are deleted just because all the
release ARE on some site it does not mean that they
works 100% (or are 100% authentic).

So if you have transfered you own disks/tapes please
upload them here - they may contain information or
releases (part of maybe) that IS missing and CAN
be used to build a better digital library.

Well I usually find alot in the collections. As long its not just a copy of some other disks.

Besides findes new releases Im finding updates to existing releases in the archive. This is also the reason why I wrote several times that people should recheck their own entries now and then to see if theres a more accurate version

just a quick note to say im in the middle of buying some webspace with unlimted space and therefore i can probably host all of the packs in the future :)

@ Maestro: cool, but beware that sometimes unlimeted webspace means tight download limit, slow downloading or not allowed to download files without having a massive HTML-to-file ratio...

Check the fine print ;-)

Whoever hosts it: don't disappear in 1 year and then we have to re-establish the packs, the same committment as CSDb honours will need to be shown.

The host will certainly do a great service for all people who collect, preserve, search for and enjoy C64 productions.

Found an old CD which i got from someone called Spook.

Name is C64 Tribute CD V1.0 and covering lots of demos and other stuff like printed scene mags, disk covers aso.

I uploaded them to my Rabbitshare account:

Set number 9 from Earthshaker's collection (earthshaker_xfer_009_d64.7z) has just been uploaded to my open directory.
193 images, 18MB.

Missing numbers were unformatted disc sides.

One side needed to be filecopied (possibly files are missing). I couldn't get it transfered with NibRead.
I tried two versions, various settings.
Even StarCommander didn't want it as a whole side.

Earthshaker's collection is still being transfered.
I just put sets 10#1, 10#2 and 10#3 online HERE.

10#4 and 10#5 will follow tomorrow, then I'll move to the next box (11).
