Sid Duzz It
Hi'yall,
I was wondering who else is using Shape's SDI editor around here. I would like to talk about the editor with other users about their experiences with it and maybe some technical blah blah aswell.
Cheers! |

Hi everyone. Are there any music tutorials that work with SDI? I never made any music on the c64, but I know how to play the piano a bit, so I'm not completely unmusical ;) SDI comes with a great tutorial which will show you how to use this program, but it's still a bit cryptic. Thanks for help :) |

Without any further introduction into tracker based music editors,
basic knowledge of the hexadecimal system and the SID chip,
i imagine it could be a bit difficult to wrap your head around the whole thing.
I recall that Rambones started some instructional videos on Youtube, you might want to look at those.
I'd advise to download the SDI package here from csdb wich
includes a bunch of demotunes.
Load a couple of them into the editor and hit F1 to get an idea of what SDI looks like.
Alternatively do what i did, ask people who know. worked for me.
Drop me a PM if you have a question, i speak german too. |

I already know how the hexadecimal system works now, I'm just learning how to program in assembler and also did some experiments :)
At the moment I'm trying to figure out how the demosongs work and what the hexadecimal numbers do.
Thanks for the videos, will check them now for better understanding some basic things. |

Just like my videos do: learn one command at the time. learn one area of the editor at the time.
This is why the videos are split into 1 thing pr episode.
And read the manual, do all the examples in the manual.
You have to get the stuff into the fingers. :) |

Knowing your way around with an assembler is a big plus,
later on in the production process you will have to wield
a modded turboassembler to make an executable out of your tune.
There isn't any packer as such.

You mean I have to compress my music before I can use it in my own programs? How does it work? |

No, there is no compressor or packer as such.
SDI saves the music data in a "compressed" form into a SEQ file.
When the tune is done, you dump it to disk in SDI into an .seq file.
That gets loaded into the modified turboassembler together with the player source.
Then you assemble the whole shebang, save it from memory to disk and voilá you've got yourself a tune.
I've screenrecorded the process and uploaded it on youtube here |

We might release SDI v2.1 sometime soon, and we have opened a SDI forum. The forum is invite only.
If anyone here wants to be part of that forum and help beta testing then PM me your email adress with your wanted username.
First we finish v2.1 then we wrap up V3.0
