I'm too used to DMC5.0 it has grown on me. When I do tracked music it sounds (to me) like my two attemmpts in GoatTracker I and II compos.. lifeless... (maybe also thanx to pc ;-)

"I also find making instruments the hardest part."
really? i found that rather simple and self explaining. composing a tune on the other hand is a totally different matter .... =P

Making it sound good together is quite hard. You can convert the tune to C64 using some automatic convertor, or note by note.. but making it sound good and "natural" is quite a task. Once I failed on Madonna's Ray of Light.. i started with drumms and bass background track and totally failed to add the rest on top of that. it just din't feel like natural way of doing it. Next time I will ever try to make Ray of Light (which will probably never happen) I will do it the classic way.. building it by adding one slice of a timeline on top of another..

Converting isnt a good way.
its like loading a midi tune, and trying to fix all the instruments and effects.

when you make music and create the sounds as you compose it, you develop the sounds especially for that piece, and thats how you get an original feel and good quality.

and when you create sounds, and take your time with it, not just doing a 5 min job, you feel a whole lot better about it in the end.

i think you are mixing up composing and making sounds, which are totally different things.
and if composing in whatever app he is familiar with instead of some tedious c64 based editor improves the workflow for someone, why should he NOT do it? working with that 1-rasterline tracker and starting from scratch instead of doing the bulk of the work in midi and import it? FU :)

As I said I find making instruments very technically.
But I might manage it! I have a good tutor. (Roland Hermans) And I could ask you guys if it's not related
specifically to the RH player.

I like using Renoise because it's really easy to use and what I said making pc tunes out of it.
You have to think ahead how it will sound on the 64.
But for complicated SIDs it might be better to compose directly on the 64.

Will be looking forward to your upcoming video!

"I find making instruments very technically."
it _is_ the technical aspect of making sid (or any other chippy) music :) (check http://magicdisk.untergrund.net/md/KURS-MUSIK-KURS2.html- it relates to x-ample tracker, but the basic principle is always the same anyway)

making sounds isnt technical, its personal taste.

all you have to do is make waveform+frequency, and set the ADSR you prefer.

pulse is 3-4 bytes, in some editors only 2
filter same

spend 1 day pr week doing it, you learn it in 1 month.
and remember, its personal taste, not technical!

all the wavforms and stuff is in sid guide by agemixer.

look this is a standard snare drum:

wave:
81 ce
81 c0
41 00 .loop here
81 c3 .or loop here
.loop

ADSR: 0990
pulsewidth: 08

now, play around with changing the frequency byte, until you like it. and try to insert more noise, or more pulse.

you learn by playing around
thats how you learned everything when you was a kid!

even if i show a 1 hour video, making sounds.
you can learn nothing from it.

you can just copy.

you learn by playing around!
if you want to make own sounds so people say "yogi bear sounds!", then you have to do that. :)
