Turning off character ROM

So, it's me again :)

I vaguely remember there's something about the VIC only being able to see the characterset ROM at $9000. For example if I bank switch to $8000-$BFFF and turn on bitmap at $8000, then I see the characterset even though I turned everything off ($01=#$35). Now, my question is - can I somehow turn that off or do I need to put my bitmap somewhere else? (would it be sufficient to move it to the other half of the bank ($A000-$BFFF)?

There is no way to disable the character ROM, sorry. You can move it to the other half of the bank, or to another bank.

Setting $01 affects only CPU. Vic see anyway ram with charset rom fixed at $1000 and $8000.

To clarify Tao's response: It is your bitmap that can be moved to the other half. Character ROM stays in place always.

Which is only possible using a cart. </smartass>

MacGuyver only needs a paperclip (pun not intended).

I've been routinely using a fork, before knowing you could reset with a card or a button...

Or you could do what one of my younger brothers did to my 64 -- connect the ground cable from the C2N to the expansion port, thus blowing the fuse and messing up one of the VIA-chips (that 64 -- now retired -- randomly inserted joystick #2 up events, thus making it rather difficult to play some games -- Tetris being extremely annoying, for instance, where up = pause).
