SAM speech and SID music together?
As I was fooling around with SAM speech the other day, my friend and I had an idea to try and use the SAM speech engine together with a SID tune. Im wondering if this is possible or even worth doing, as SAM takes up a lot of CPU time. Has it been done before?? It's just an idea which im interested in pursuing further - for sure! ;)

You can use the SAM sound.. but the whole speech player has to be written to work on nmi/irq, or else you cant use it. |

But SAM sounds like shit, if you want to do anything semi-serious music-wise with it. |

almost :) i have hacked it to render the sample data into memory, so you can play it using nmi (or whatever). check http://hitmen.c02.at/html/tools_sam.html |

well, no speech synth sounds better than SAM on a c64. the radwar formanth synth sounds total crap, and berkeley speech system is not real, its based on samples.. |

ESS is a bit of a mystery. Ive read as much as I can about the berkeley group but can't find anything more out about their code, methods or anything. Thou, Texas Instruments made the best speech synth chip for the times - kicking everyone's ass! |

Hmmmm...
Sam is indeed very cleverly made. And extremely short. But do realise that most present-day "brute-force" speech synthesis is based on sampled phonemes and snippets. Since the nineties most sound synthesizers (not virtual analog ofcourse) work that way. Sampled waveforms are recalculated into a sort of vector table and then basic waveforms are modulated with it to create the eventual sound. The Malström synth in Propellerheads' Reason suite works basically the same.
So, I beg to differ Jan that ESS cheats but you are right by saying that SAM is real speech SYNTHESIS.
But quality-wise ESS can do great things. Why doesn't someone hack this one?
Cave of the Word Wizard
There is a lot in there. Should be enough to keep you amazing techno-boffins busy for a while...
ps.
We do have a "work in progress" of a rap song featuring SAM. It's been in the cold room for quite a while now so I guess it's time to finish the bugger. :)) |

Regarding ESS: According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESS_Technology the compression algorithm is patented by Forrest S. Mozer, one of the guys who founded ESST. Has anybody looked at the patents or tried contacting the guy? |

SAM features on first record by my band, saying its name on the opening track. and this is probably a highlight of that track :) the quality of SAM speech will never cease to amaze me. |
