Vice64 loses file associations for D64, prg etc

Hi,
I've moved the location of where my Vice64 files (x64.exe etc) are, and after that I cannot get the file association of double-clicking d64/prg files to work with x64.exe

When I click on a d64/prg file, it simply opens the browser to which program I want to associate it with. When I then look in the list of programs, the Vice64 icon is gone. Therefore, I click on browse, finds the new location of x64.exe and selects it by "open".

When I do this, I am returned to the icon list of different suggestion of programs to open the d64/prg, but the Vice64 is still not present.

I know I've had this issue in the past on a different computer, and I gave up then. I made a "Send To" link to x64.exe instead, and had to "send to" that program. Which worked, but those not work if I want to have d64/prg associations with Visual Basic and KickAssembler editoring.

Therefore, does anyone know the correct Registry entry to edit or any real workaround in order to fix the issue with the broken file association to Vice64?

I'm using Vice64 2.3 with Windows 7 64-bit.

Cheers Magnar

Not a vice issue but windows issue. WinVice uses its own settings in vice.ini. The file associations settings are not even in a single registry entry.
For example I have
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.d64]
@="cbmfolder"

which leads to:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cbmfolder]
@="cbm64 disk image"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cbmfolder\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cbmfolder\shell\open]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cbmfolder\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\c64\\vice\\x64.exe -truedrive +virtualdev +iecdevice8 +reu +saveres \"%1\""

and this is ONLY for .d64 extension, you have to locate in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT all the extensions used by vice and save them separately to txt files. then you can move the txt files on the new PC and reimport them. It can be done with a simple batch file for exporting and one for importing.

This is for Win98, your system may vary. =)

The registry keys in Win7 are exactly the same. Look for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.prg and \.d64 and check where they point at.

What I always do for any file type is right click, open with, choose default program. Once there choose the program to load it with or hit browse if the icon isn't there and make sure the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box is ticked.

from time to time I have the same problem with win xp. solution: open a folder window, go to tools, settings, find the file associations, and tweak it until it works.

edit: oh yeah, right click and file association doesnt solves it.

Magnar: completely delete d64 and prg, and use a regbase cleaner program.

Then click a d64, and choose VICE
Then click a PRG and choose VICE.

CCleaner and Glary Utilities is good to clean the regbase.

yes ofcourse. sorry for that. i accidently said that although i know that most registry cleaner tools are totally not dubios snake oil and you should run at least two of them (simultanously if you can) now to improve your windows experience significantly.
