char mode tools

I want to try some char mode gfx.
what tool you suggest to :
1. convert from koala to char?
2. build custom maps with converted chars?
i dont think of doing any game or something but rather maybe use char mode for demo gfx. any hints will be appreciated.

Try Char Pad:

www.coder.myby.co.uk

I have it on good authorety though that there might be a native C64 app. on it's way for the same purpose ;-)

For converting koala to char, you can write your own converter or I can send you my routine. And I'm sure someone else can point you in the direction of a good koala to char converter. Just remeber that Char Mode is quite restricted in comparison with koala. In adition, a charset only covers 256 characters of the screen so if all chars in your koala is unique (different pixel composition within a 4 x 8 pixel block), you need to use more then one char set.

Timanthes can also export to a charset + screen. Not sure how it shows the number of used characters though.

back in the good old day I used Koala-Changer for converting to chars, which was really handy...

vicpack has a unique character + map option. Not sure what it's limits are as far as character counts and colours though. It's also more PC to C64 rather than Koala-> but that's easy enough to resolve.

How about J.Fox Editor Hires Multi

Depends what you really want to do. You don't need to reuse the chars with multiple charsets.

To me the only "advantage" of char mode is hires/multi at the same time, the downside is 11 colours.
