Sid Duzz It
Hi'yall,
I was wondering who else is using Shape's SDI editor around here. I would like to talk about the editor with other users about their experiences with it and maybe some technical blah blah aswell.
Cheers! |

Hi there,
I'm learning SDI in this days...
Sometimes I'm a little bit confuzed when sequencer data are overlapped on tracking data, although the method used is convenient.
About sounds I candidly :-) admit I'm not able to use filters... so, actually, my sounds are very very standard.
Dunno if it's a bug but sometimes when I try to set the length (shift + inst/del) of a sequence I obtain a series of
UNUSED
UNUSED
UNUSED
instead of
-- ---
-- ---
-- ---
Maybe it's just because I forget shift + k to kill and initialize a sequence.
Please, can you explain me how to finalize a song? I think it's just my problem, but I have some difficult with it.
First of all I have to dump the music, right?

Hi!
Youre right. The multiple "unused" in the sequencer rows appears only if you do not shift-k.
Im not sure but i think in newer versions of sdi it automaticaly "shift-k"'s the pattern once you enter data into it.
The finalizing part looks a little akward at first, but its pretty simple actually.
You dump the tune, then you load the modified turbo assembler from shape. Load the player sourcecode and go to the last line of the sourcecode, then load your dumped tune at the end of the player sourcecode.
After that you can either adjust some parameters at the top of the sourcecode (or just leave them on default) and then assemble the whole thing.
Once you assembled and started it the tune is in the memory ready to be saved to disk by using the monitor of your choice.
Thats it.

Filters and pulse are a little tricky at first but they both are similar and also easy once you understand them.
You should usually only use filters on one channel, anything else might produce undwanted sideeffects (as far as i can tell).
Also using filtered instruments and a non filtered instruments on the same channel will produce nasty clicking sounds on a real c64.
Switch to Instrument editmode :
For each instrument there is a two byte filter and band / resonance setting. Try setting the filter to 01 and the band/resonance to 1f.
then shift-f to the filterprograms
here in row 01 (coresponds to the filter 01 in the instrument) you can edit your filter.
Just try playing around with the values (in the last column of the 01 filter row set 41 so that it jumps to itself)
Remember that the last column of each row of the filterprogram represents the jump point to where it will go to after finishing the current row.
There are a few pitfalls with filters that dont appear until after assembling it with the turbo assembler.
If one of your filterprograms jumps to a point that does not exist (i.e. to a empty row) the filter might sound right inside the editor but will be broken in the final assembled tune.

...which is true only for an old (6581) sid. 8580 is click-free. |

Im not sure, but i guess you are referring to the pattern order information displayed when pressing f6. you can disable / enable that with f6. I usually leave that information disabled.

That's because the filter enable bit is swiched on and off if you use filtered and non-filtered instruments on the same channel. On the 6581 enabling disabling filter on a channel will produce a click.. On the 8580 this thing is fixed, which is why we hate it ;).. (Flame.. flame!) LOL |

Can't you circumvent this by using filtered instruments with zero resonance? Just one of my fancy ideas that surely nobody has thought of before... ;-) |

Yes, but in players that auto enable filters on channels by instrument definition, you'll still have to make all filtered instruments for that or the channels you wish to apply filter to. |
