More music genre compos??

Highscore Power Ballad music compo turned out to be a success and activated the music-scene a lot! This compo which was born thanks to oneliners obviously needs a sequel.. Or does it?

What do you people think? Was this just an idea that carried for this one time or should there be more of this kind?

If there's going to be another one, what theme would activate people the most? I want your ideas.

Here's mine:

The theme should be wide enough so that there won't be 30 "poker faces" etc.. :) How about James Bond theme? Everyone knows that typical Bond-type of music and chord progressions that make it typical but still there are 23(?) great, different Bond tunes out there.. In other words, no covers. Totally new tunes in a James Bond spirit.
50 years of Bond so far and this idea would even end up with a contribution-disk (music selector) for the sake of it.

Now it's your turn.. Whenever there are some great ideas, then let's pick up one, even vote for the theme or so..

Now let's talk...

I'm all for. I only have problem with the actual sticking to the rules. If there is a "power ballad" written in the name of the compo, one would expect power ballad and not more or less generic music in the compo. Sometimes I thought.. wow, nice tune, would be great to have such thing in c64.sk sid compo.. but why is it here. Anyway, if you set theme, and not genre, then it will work much better. With genre, it's a bit tricky. Some musicians just ignore it, it seems ;-))

Yea, CreaMD you're right there. Myself, I'm kinda more after themes than genres too.. That way your hands aren't tied in any way.

Personally I'm a bit into genrecompos. Makes it a bit more challenging. I'd like to see a cover/remix-compo were the goal was to cover an old SID or perhaps a real song. Maybe you could choose from three given tunes or something like that.

Genre/Theme, both are quite stretchable. But personally I'd learn more from genre, especially a genre that I don't know anything about.

Alas, if you have the time, it seems you can just start a compo of your liking here, and the usual suspects will participate. :)

I'd opt for genres. Fixing the genre is more like a restriction, which forces you to be creative within a certain frame and helps you get on with your composing business right away -- which is fun. Having a theme is more like you can do it in a zillion of ways, and I have a feeling that I would find that less inspiring.

I'm a sucker for online music compos, just because they give all participants such a better audience than the usual crowd at demoparties. Don't get me wrong, I really like parties - and it's a killer experience to have your stuff played at max volume - but music compos at parties are traditionally more about torture and less about discovering great tunes. Sitting at home and devoting time to sifting through all entries..yup, that's the way I like it.

So I'll try to find time to contribute in the future if there are some more. Personally I don't mind if it's theme- or genre-based. It might be tedious to listen through 30 variations of 'reggae' but then again, like Frantic says, if you go for the theme 'space' you'll get entries that will have fuck all to do with the theme.

But then again, at the end of the day I'm mostly interested in a good listening experience and new music to inspire me. So anything goes. :)

Online compos are nice, but i'm way to undisciplined to
compose anything specific like a theme or a certain genre on purpose.

It's a great idea! Whether it's genre or theme is just semantics, right? James Bond themes could be seen as a genre, for example. Anyway, some suggestions:

Blues
Samba
Bossanova
Ambient
Death Metal

Arranging to a style is fun.

I'm on for a Bond theme challenge. Epicness, suspense, strong melody(yes to Golden Eye, no to that Madonna crap), big or intimate with 3 sid voices only.

Afterall, Bond title sequences have been an inspiration to many demos over the years.
