For me it is well-worked-out soundtrack and a rythm of the demo (timing of the effects). |

Dawnfall is an example of outstanding code. Gave me the 'Woooooooh what is this!!!' feeling, one of the first demos i saw after leaving the pc scene for 64
Check the entire top 10 Demos, they're all great and not the same style. choose you favourites and perhaps we can advise some more. |

Ok those stand out for me (as far as I remember right ;-)
(1992) Wonderland 9
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=634
Beautiful musics. It's like a collection of videoclips for me. Some parts are watcheable for 3-5 minutes.
(1993) Seal of Focalor (aka Digital Messiah)http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=79
DEEP.
And one more
Red Storm
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=721
DEEP!
(1994)Access Denied
My favourite demo by Reflex. Access Denied
It has really beautiful atmosphere thanx to music by PVCF (I don't consider him to be a great musician but some of his tunes are really cool) They later released very powerfull mathematical demos. E.g. Radio Napalm and Mathematica, but Access Denied stands out for me ;-)
(1995)Dawnfall
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=909
(1996) Stupidity III
By Wrath Designs.
Stupidity III
(1997)
If you know PC demo called Second Reality here is it's "C64 cover" : Second Reality Very good musical remakes and some well put effects. Quite low quality gfx.
(1998) The Last Reactor
by React: http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=3995
Absolutely beautiful soundtrack. Many surprising endings ;-)
(2000)Deus ex machina
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=47
If you like graphical demo... ;-) It stands out not because of great musical timing or rythm but because it's really flawless.
(2002) Insomnia
by 64 Ever ( Insomnia V1.1 )
Few more-or-less original C64 effects, great timing to music. Consistent graphical design.

I wish people would still do breath-taking demos like Censor did with their Wonderland series. I was astonished and amazed with the effects and mixed SID+DIGI music samples.
I own a tool, which I believe Censor design may have used for one of their demos. It is called 'DD+FC Editor'. Which can play digi drums and also Future Composer music as well. Maybe I should do a release of this tool on a proper label (not the fake DLX label) :) |

Personally I don't like samples on c64, it doesn't work well enough mixed with the perfection that is SID ;) |

Samples work well when the SID voices themselves are kind of harsh / ugly too :) |

http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=4749
- Parts (Graham/Oxyron doing magic (you actually have to press "space"!!!))
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=2564
- Feeling Retro
Feeling Retro
...and a lotta other ones i don't remember right now. |

i think, one of the first demos, which really created "cinema-feeling" was dutch-breeze/blackmail.
it's the (perfect) combinationen of very nice'n'good effects and a well-timed building-up of the parts.
a group, which often tended to build-up a part _very_ slow until the "real" effect was shown, was faces. :-)
you almost needed several days to see all parts of their demo. ;-)
