disks

Gents,

Not to shoulder pet myself on the back too much, but I have taken quite some efforts in time and money to get news disks with old wares and sort them all out to maintain a part of history. Also I’ve noticed some of you are doing it this way.

Not to be offensive, but sometimes I see lots of weird stuff coming into csdb that looks as if someone just dumping a directory of pre-sorted stuff in.

So here’s a question for the guys out there that slam the plastic to the drive.. what’s your best tips on getting new old disks?

Oh .. and of course respect and thanks to all of you xferring out there ;)

You could look through old issues of Happy Computer, ASM and 64er and write a letter to the private people who put in ads.

I had this idea to do it already years ago, but no time.

And of course mail people via e-mail.

Well "we" are trying to find old sceners and old friends who got disks and then try to borrow them and transfer them. Alot of people are helping and its really great.

Your point in seing stuff coming into CSDB thats presorted is right. I have seen several times people imported disks directly from the Bod CD's, Gamebase 64, the c64heaven acrhive project or other sites. It would be more helpful for the community if these people started going through alot of the packs that are in the The Movers Treasure Chest.

I usually see 2 problems when people upload pre-sorted stuff. One problem is people forget that things can change on the websites, archives, cds etc. because the person behind the site finds a more accurate version. This could be a picture file, docs file, note file etc. Second problem is if the gets updated on the websites, archive, cds etc. then I can almost be 100% sure that guy who uploaded it to CSDB dont update release here. This means that an unaccurate release is being kept on CSDB.

Also I think its a bit unfair for people who use time to sort disks out and upload them on CSDB just can see others getting their uploads done in a easy way as they pre-sorted stuff.

ebay does the trick too
you dont even need to bid, just take some auction near your city which is running for another week and then contact the seller and lend the disks if you are smart :)

of course, sceners disks are prefered

but you can get nice stuff off those disks from ebay, fleamarket etc as well :))

Well scene disks as non scene disks are interesting. If the non scener lived close to an area where alot of big sceners are you can often find alot of nice stuff from the groups in the area.

Wow good ideas gents, please keep the flowing !!!

@rough -> woah.. that’s a far out idea.. I love it! Did you or anyone else try that yet? With what results if any?

@knoeki -> yeah but damnit if I remember correctly you got still hundreds of disks that need to be transferred.. grrrrr I just remembered I could have picked them up when I dropped you off after the oxy.. ohnoes!!! hehehe

@mason -> well yeah I certainly see your ‘unfair’ point. To be honest I’ll even admit I get a bit pissed myself sometimes seeing some uploads here (not to mention names, but it’s obvious sometimes) but I now know the time and effort it takes to find the disks, transfer them, get them sorted etc. and some people have been doing that like forever already. So I have to really say a BIG thumbs up to you oldskool collectors !!!

@wreg -> yeah that’s a great idea too. The last 100-200 disks I went through actually were a sold batch that I could borrow 2 days before they were going to be picked up by the new owner. Actually found a lot of nice uploads for csdb on those :D

In general I’m actually finding the weirdest stuff on non-scene disks lately.
I never guessed what kind of stuff non-sceners would keep, you know like the absolutely worst version of a game simply because they never got a better version hehe :D

Thanks for the input guys! Keep those ideas and disks rolling ;)

Hmm, you (Mason, Bordeaux etc.) really got a good point there.

I'm one of those uplaoding stuff from Masons archive, so I guess I'll find some other way to support the csdb then instead of uploading.

But how should the stuff from the archives then be uploaded? I don't care about the credits, all I want is to make the csdb more complete.

So, only a few more "easy" uploads from me I guess.

Cheers from Anders

Yeah, that's what I thought and that's why I'm uploading stuff in here. But according to this threat I doesn't seem to be "the best way to do it", and that's fine with me.

Another way is to contact old users group officers from groups that have gone out of business. I've contacted a couple of old users group members, that still had their disk collections stored away. The last one I got 8 boxes of stuff for $20(us). Alot of the times they don't want to throw them away as they've spent many hours in the past collecting them and sorting them, so you can find some great things if you are persistent.
