Ruby was an OUTSTANDING issue, there is no doubt. A lot of text on different subjects, all well written.
I have a couple of minor niggles with the system the way it is.
- The fade between menu & text looks nice, but it slows things down
- The music menu is slightly awkward; it would be nice to have a shortcut (+ next tune, - previous tune, M to pop-up the menu) and/or a visual indicator of tune number/name.

Yeah, I really enjoyed VN#40 a lot! The intro was awesome, very atmospheric! The texts were well written, although the reviews of quite old demos was a little confusing. I thought something like: Wasn't this already reviewed in a couple other diskmags?
Then I noticed that the diskchange routine was sometimes a little buggy (1541-II). Sometimes the mag simply crashed, sometimes the diskchange wasn't detected all, and sometimes it needed a couple of tries to get the new chapter to load. Maybe something as simple as "Press Space" would fix this?
Another thing that always bugs me is the music menu. It takes quite a while to navigate to it, a shortcut key (as already suggested by Merman) would be great. I'd also appreciate if the currently played tune would be shown somewhere. There should be plenty of space in the upper/lower border where you could put something like: "Currently playing: Spetsnaz/Avalon".
Oh, one more thing:
An increasing number of users owns a 1581, FD2000 or some kind of harddisk these days. It would be nice if those funky devices could be supported in the future. Maybe even an option to load the mag with kernal loader, so that the Jiffy DOS or any other speeders wouldn't crash.
So long,
Steppe |

1) fast music selector ( fn keys or number keys )
2) better disk change notification, as in print the friggin diskside needed :) especially vn#40 was a bitch when hopping from chapter to chapter in random order ( or maybe its just me who doesnt read it all sequentially ?) |

Yeah, that "turn disk" requester might be a bit more detailed. |

It WAS in a fairly logical order, compared to Publication #50... |

You didnt understand, I do not read the chapters in order.
I dont read all chapters in the first run either :) so a loggical order doesnt mean jack when jumping around from the start of the list to the middle etc. |

I know what you mean about jumping around a mag! I do it myself sometimes. With Scene World we only have two sides, and I tend to "split" the issue based on the submenus. Take issue 9 - the first three submenus have their text on side 1, the others on side 2. Issue 8's split was after the first four submenus.
Vandalism Ruby was a special case (as was PBC #50), so it may not happen again. (Unless Jazzcat is planning 8 sides for issue 50 of VN :D ) |
