Games created with Action Replay monitor

I created this topic since my `omega120 games` topic has been closed for some reason, If any you coders out there codes with a `Action Replay` monitor I would like you to contribute to this thread of the amount of coding you may have done with the cartridge, I myself as many of you may be aware I created and wrote `Manky` with `Action Replay` monitor and very soon you can expect from my website update6 `Manky` a very playable I am sure version of the game with a few surprises in store for you all.

i must second enthusi. except for the fact that i like java as programming language. ;)

some people just like the feeling of filling the memory of their beloved machine by hand. monitor is the closest yet comfortable way doing this. i guess it's not the result that counts here.

it's the same with doing gfx on/for c64. some people are still doing all pixel work on the real machine. some (like me) are using pc based tools like 0xpaint, timanthes, ...
being a retard for me starts when either somebody is poking a bitmap into memory by hand or when just stupidly using converters. but i'm afraid to see that using converters gets more and more common. maybe some day people will laugh at me saying 'why are you still setting pixels by hand, when you can just take a photo and convert it!?'

in the end it's always about 'the feeling' when it comes to dealing with a vintage platform like the 64.

it might not be the most sophisticated way omega120 is doing his work. but still i think it's all about that certain feeling.

so, let this guy do his thing. ignore him if you like. support him if you like. i don't really care.

Im glad some people are commenting on decent thoughts I was beginning to wonder if there was such a thing.

Course coding in a monitor is fun and I respect the players also otherwards how else would I get to remove any bugs if there are any like.

No you bloody don't, it took me two sodding days and a bloody YouTube video to tell you that you had a bug and all these players are saying your game is stupidly hard and you're only just starting to pay attention now!

Take your time?! You wouldn't even admit there was a problem; you essentially called me a liar by claiming i doctored the damned video, i'd certainly not call that respecting the players, i was a player giving you quite a bit more feedback than i assume your bloody playtesters did since they and you both missed that bug.

Look, I knew from the very first post that you like to use a monitor. That's fine!... it's not a murder crime to create some form of small production with a monitor, so long as you know what you're doing, fair enough, world's ur oyster!

All we tried to do is tell you that an assembler is a much more efficient environment if you ever wanted to make a much better and maintainable game project or other professional c64 productivity, which I am really surprised why you don't take this in. TMR himself has worked two(?) working days to prove our point. and god dammit, even Richard Bayliss uses ACME for his games.

I even told you my own differences between Action Replay monitors and assemblers on your very own forum, remember? That doesn't mean I use a monitor 24/7, but only for quick knock-ups like an IRQ music player or inverting a char-set... monitors are good for those sort of things nowadays... well, for me anyway. :)

As we in the scene are usually more interested in demos, 99% of us would use an assembler to reduce time of productivity, as BIG demos (or demos that would at least satisfy scene veterans) can take so bloody long to release and that at the same time we want to keep the demo production rate as high as possible to keep the scene alive, that's our frame of mind. Fair enough if you say you are not bothered about time of when you release your next production, it is a hobby after all. Sure we all have commitments, but we also have deadlines! ;)

You also mentioned somewhere on this thread that emulators are no good. The VICE team have really worked their balls off to write such a perfect emulation of a real C64. There are also thousands of people (especially in England) who don't have a real Commodore 64 any more and that the only way necessary to retain their glorious memories of their retro gaming childhood is to use emulators. Even I find it extremely difficult to find a real commodore 64 at a local boot sale nowadays, which is why I tend to use emulators to save a lot of hassle until one finally shows up. Emulators therefore do have a place in one's heart, aye?

In conclusion, I've learned that you are more comfortable with a monitor (I'd never thought I would meet one that would admit such a statement, as I used to be the same one time :)), which I now accept.

But please do us one small favour... pack it in with advertising your game too much all over different forums. We all know that your game is available from your own site and that any one of us, scener or non-scener, can download it from there if we ever wanted to. You can always inform your updates on the site itself rather than telling all of us on here. It would of been more appropriate if you had just posted a link to your site on www.c64.sk and left it at that, avoiding the result of people getting pissed off with adverts of updates after updates after updates after updates, all day long. I hope you understand. Peace be with you.


and to the rest: maybe we should all stop arguing now and close this thread. If this gets any further there could be major fallouts (again). Be happy and code, compose, pixel, laugh, watch euro 2008, have a lager, whatever. It's the holidays for goodness sake!
