D2TV mod commercial in disguise on c64.sk
Do you think this is fair:

when you click on the "news" (go64.de) all what you find is a picture and sum text telling you how much it costs to order a modded D2TV.
What everyone (atleast me) would except when clicking there is about 15 pictures of the hack, and text on how to do it. But no, there's zero info about how they hacked it at the Hobby & Elektronik 2005 Expo. They just want your money.
Thats like when browsing for porn, and instead a gallery of a naked chick, you get 6 new window with porn advs. ;)

this whole thing with commercial activities beeing mixed up with scene activities is just sad. even more sad to see how maintainers of certain scene pages cant cut the line properly (and i dont refer to c64.sk only here, csdb has the same problem). i just cant take certain things seriously anymore with all those double standards beeing widely accepted. *sigh* |

i understand it completely, but i dont *agree*. completely different thing. and simply ignoring that fact by "not wasting energy on discussing" won't do any good at all. if anything, it will drag away people from "wasting their energy" on supporting sites that they thought were dedicated to the scene. |

The best info on the internet is there... the guys that worked on both versions post there.
Also, two newer games have been released in the US at Radio Shack stores called GM Corvette Steering Wheel and GM Hummer Steering Whell... both are based on DTV2 hardware and can be hacked in a similar fashion. C64.sk is dedicated to the scene as much as scene is dedicated to C64.sk. If there are some sceners releasing some stuff , they should also put it at c64.sk (no I don't mean cracks of Protovision games ;-)). C64.sk is open news. Anyone can add any news anytime. The news are curretnly maintained by me, T.M.R. I trash everything I consinder abusing or stupid. But somehow the sharp edges which I had when I was starting the site turned more round over the time. ;-). Deleting/not deleting some news has almost always negative impact. I'm exaggerating a bit, but it's like this: If I trash it, the news poster hates me, if I won't trash it, someone will start accusing me of having too much tolerance etc.
I would like to trash following:
-all news about magazines and pages which aren't in english (e.g. some german paper mags news),
- I would like to trash all retro magazine news.
-I would like to trash (lets check the first page now...)
-.. slayradio retro concert news... (because it's not c64 release, or anything useful for c64 production etc. and it is not runnable on c64)...
-hacked c64 dtv..
- retro (*YUCK*) survival delayed - news..
- local tv cover belgian show..
- 8bit mayhem podcast news..
and I could continue with more and more posts like this.
But everytime I delete something there is someone who sees it like an unfair action ;-)
We had discussions about this with T.M.R. and MacGyver but we always ended on case-to-case evaluation policy..
what do you propose Groepaz?

i wouldnt have a problem with you deleting all of what you listed :) i wouldnt have a problem with both scpu-stuff and c64dtv stuff removed from this database either for that matter. i would even go a step further and
- delete everything commercial (that includes go64 advertisements, protovision news, news about jens' products etc pp) if people want to get news on commercial activities they should consider using a commercial platform (such as the protovision or go64 homepage)
- delete anything related to 3rd party "c64 appearance"... "c64 featured on blablabla" etc crap
- delete _all_ news related to cracks. crack news belong into the underground discmags imho. they certainly dont belong on public news sites. (this also makes the problematic exception for protovision void)
- delete anything without real substance like "xyz website updated". that kinda stuff belongs into a forum or whatever else, not on the mainpage of a newssite.
like always, it all boils down to what you really want the site to be. if you want to be a generic page for "everyone" that covers "all", you need to allow all. but you will certainly loose a bunch of sceners as readers. if you want it to be a scene-news sites, you need to drop some of the unrelated mainstream stuff. but you will loose a bunch of other readers.
the point is a different one however (and this database has a simelar problem) - there should be distinct rules, and you should stick to them. NO exceptions. then everyone can judge by the rules if he can agree with them according to his own definition of what is scene and what is not (i'm very aware of the fact that different people have different opinions on this). having said that, i can say that both csdb and c64.sk lost value -for me- in the past months due to the increased number of -to me- useless crap happening there.
but you shouldnt listen to me anyways. i'm just a lame cracker who already did his part in destroying the c64 o_O

Why not create a "c64bullshit.com".
Many people put interest into an ancient machine,but it is
clearly not appreciated by some.

You should rejoice that others also have an interest in
the Commodore!
I consider C64.sk as my newspaper related to the C64.
Many articles I skip,but there are some very good ones
every now and again.
And this stab at CSDb I really don´t understand?!

to put it simple: i dont care about those who arent involved into what i consider "scene". that includes ppl whose only interest is playing the old games, remix sid tunes, use geos or anything else of that crap. go64 and loadstar and all that stuff is a better platform for them.

heh, I didnt wanted to go as deep as Groepaz did. Why I started all the whining, is that the post in question was absolutely misleading. if it would contain the information that this is something for money, I would have simply skipped it. It was unfair not doing that. Our world is so much full of commercials, I cant go from point X to point Y in Budapest without having 3 ppl pushing into my face their flyers. Atleast I can avoid that, but the post in c64.sk didnt give me the chance. |
