SID-lovers! How about the whole HVSC on your mp3-player?
See: www.rockbox.org
Compatible with:
Apple: 1st through 5.5th generation iPod, iPod Mini and 1st generation iPod Nano (not the Shuffle, 2nd/3rd gen Nano, Classic or Touch)
Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio
Cowon: iAudio X5, X5V, X5L, M5 and M5L
iriver: H100, H300 and H10 series
SanDisk: Sansa c200, e200 and e200R series (not the v2 models)
Toshiba: Gigabeat X and F series (not the S series)
Among MANY other "Codecs" (OGG, FLAC, Musepack, WMA, AAC, MOD/xm, Nintendo-Stuff, even MPEG video) Rockbox also plays .sid! I checked it out for the past few days, and it's just fantastic!
There's a few bugs to be ironed out in the SID-player (see Bugreport FS#8287), but it's really well integrated into the GUI, you can put .sids in Playlists etc!
Only libsidplay, but since resid requires an FPU i guess it cannot be helped! ;-) Atleast it DOES have filter (unlike the last version of the iPodlinux SIDplayer I tried!)
This is especially fantastic for older players that are space-limited (like my 2GB Nano), because you can fit the whole HVSC on there in merely 280MB (yes, that is including FAT32 allocation-loss!)
That's not all: The Rockbox-project was started by Zagor of Horizon (they call him their "glorious leader" jokingly! 8) and Boogaloo (also HZ) is working on it as well. Even King Fisher of Triad is listed as a contributor! ;-)
People there don't seem to care much about SIDplay bugs (shame, Horizon! >:-), so if any of you SID-lovers with coding abilities feel the need to supply a patch, that'd be really awesome!.. ;-D
As always (see: iPodlinux) there's loads more stuff of debatable usefulness, shitloads of Games and some Demos... Unfortunately their text editor is pretty much absolutely useless, atleast on iPods with scrollwheel! <:-)
MPEG Video replay works fine though, as does JPG viewing and OGG replay. Those I'd consider the more useful features..
It has quite a few nifty ideas (such as showing the next track in the playlist or how much time you have left on your battery!), it is way way more userfriendly than iPodlinux and it is VERY customizable!
Go ahead, give it a try! They have a nice GUI installer! ;-) You need to have FAT32 though, so all Mac-Users with HFS-iPods are shit outta luck...
P.S: This wasn't posted into the c64 composing sub on purpose! I guess way more people have an mp3-player than just musicians! ;-) |

Having the whole of HVSC on your mp3-player is impressive.
/pictures a lot of skipping required :D
So far I have gotten most of my favourite Sids down to 6 CD's worth of Wav's, and these Wav's have been put on my Sony Netwoek Walkman NW-MS700. I've never quite made the jump to iPods or Mp3 players.

Some updates:
I've found out meanwhile that this SID-player isn't based on Libsid, but TinySID (by KB/TOM/Farbrausch and Rainer Sinsch, the latter also did TinySID for PSP and the Rockbox-integration!). That explains it, I was already wondering how surprisingly good libsid sounded compared to resid! ;-D
However, TinySID has problems with some tunes. Some won't play at all, some are too slow, and if the tune has Samples, you HAVE to use the PSID version!
Apparently they have subtune support already integrated (it's on fast forward, each second represents one subtune!) and one major bug is already gone while others are being worked on.. And my suggestion for including Songlenght-DB suport was positively recieved. We're getting there! ;-)
Oh, and Badger of HZ is on the project, too, just like his brother Zagor! ;-) |

Hm, got myself an Iriver H10 today and tried out Rockbox. Have to admit, I'm not too convinced about the sidplayer yet. Might be down to the TinySid engine, but a lot of the tunes don't seem to work (especially from the classic era with the non-standard players at non-standard memory locations).
Guess I'll stick to a selection of mp3 recordings from SOASC= and keep an eye on the news section of Rockbox. |

I tried to put the whole HVSC on my mp3 player, but the Sansa's filetransfer sucks for masses of files, and after a while it crashed. :( |

i have this in my ipod, it's ok but no one ever carried on development to a level that was enjoyable, but it doesn't matter as i have a 160gb ipod classic that accommodates most sids. ;)

i'd really really want this to work on a symbian 3rd edition phone. is there anyone with a bit of understanding of programming who would want to make me happy (software-wise)? :)
