c64 - *Static Effect*

Some demo`s feature what i call a static effect (the kind of effect you can see when you pull the ariel lead out of the back of old style televisions (I say old style televsions as most televisions these days switch the screen to a black screen).

What demo features the best static effect?

I`ve seen afew, some use the screen area only, some use the side borders too and the best versions use the whole screen plus all the borders :D

I the reason i ask is, i`m working on the intro to a demo called *ZEROs & ONEs* and it is to feature full screen static plus some more stuff /WEC :)

Well, usually, if you get some lines in the sideborder, this can very easily be extended to be full-screen. About the looks: It will look better, if the "gfx" you display looks random. And, of course, it must be changed often.

The only way to do full screen is with the use of expanded hires sprites. There is one demo (the name of which escapes me?) which dose a fantastic job, with no signs of pattern repetition. Some of the lesser efforts look dodgy though ;)

From what i can remember it was either Reflex, Crest, Oxyron or Megastyle Inc. who created what i consider to be the best static effect /WEC :)

I think "+h2k" has a decent version. Anyway, if you are interested in the source of my version from "brief bursts of happiness", just let me know.

i also once coded a static effect for "fantasia", which later had been re-used in "parts". i think it's pretty good since it doesn't show any patterns and is very close to real random. it was inspired by the old demo "think twice/the judges", perhaps the first try to do a static on c64.

Just checked out +h2k, lots of hardcode there, graphics let the demo down abit though ;) the static effect look ok if abit on the dark side, it was full screen all borders i`ll give it that :)

Just checked out Brief Bursts of Hapiness, funny demo! :D
The static looked somewhat charcter based, no upper and lower border, just sideboder (still impressive though).
When i see black upper and lower borders it always reminds me of a film. So the static, rather than being real on my monitor, looked more like a film, a film of static :)

Just grabbed Fantasia (i`ve never seen this demo before), Parts wasn`t avaliable on CSDb (although i viewed it an age ago. Don`t remember the static though).

Yeah, that static in Fantasia was really rather good. It looked 4 colors? [black + 3 shades of grey]

Hey Graham, what to work on an intro design i have that uses static? it`s kinda simple, more of a memory management issue /WEC :)

@WEC: As i mentioned before, expanding this to full screen is a matter of running more often through the loop and adjusting some tables :)

The static in Brief Bursts of Happiness doesn't fill the entire screen simply because it is supposed to fit the rest of the demo - and yeah, I wanted a widescreen look to it. Fullscreen static would have clashed with the rest of the demo.

I was thinking that, you wanted a *wide screen look* to it /WEC :)

Thanks for the offer. Your source would be no use to me though, i only do graphics and design (...and the odd digi track ;) - I can`t code (will can do Basic and html but that dosn`t really count ;). If you want to code the intro/menu then that would be great /WEC :D

My favorite static effect is the one in Emulated/Upstars, since it's not as boring as the other ones :)

Probably not quite the same, but XESS2-Rewind has an effect like that when you press Run Stop/Restore.

Hi El Stocko! Your Scrolling Message Editor is a classic, around 1987 I used to pump out lots of demos made with it :)

Simple idea, some people loved it, some people loathed it when Cnet got swamped by character graphics demos :)

Sorry to go off topic as well but Stocko, I have to tell you that Xess Rewind was one of my fave demos when I just started out, and later influenced our 'comeback' demo Rewinder X (Rewinder X), and not just in name ;)

No, thanks mate. I happened to spot your demo this very day. TBH I had no idea people were still coding 64 demos nowadays. :O

Hmm, o.k., it's not a real "static" but i remember going whooohaaa as I saw A. Crowther's TV test pattern effect in Gryphon after pressing reset. That was around 1984-85.
